Celebrate Memorial Day at Miller Park

This Memorial Day make plans to bring your picnic to our park as the Brewers take on the Twins at 1:10pm.

We’ll be celebrating Military Day and the Brewers and Twins will be wearing specially designed caps and jerseys featuring an authentic military digital camouflage design licensed from the United States Marine Corps.

MLB will also conduct a moment of silence prior to all games throughout Memorial Day weekend to honor members of the military who lost their lives serving their country. On Memorial Day itself, MLB will join the National Moment of Remembrance, an initiative the league has participated in since 1997, where all games will stop for a moment at 3:00 pm local time.

The Memorial Day effort is part of MLB’s ongoing recognition of veterans, active military, and military families. MLB has committed $23 million to Welcome Back Veterans since its inception in 2008.

Welcome Back Veterans, an initiative of Major League Baseball Charities and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, provides grants to university hospitals throughout the country that provide post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) treatment to veterans and their families in  a public/private partnership.  Currently, Welcome Back Veterans is funding programs at Weill Cornell in New York City, The University of Michigan, Rush University Medical Center, Duke University, Emory University, UCLA and the Boston Red Sox’ Home Base Program at Mass General Hospital in Boston. These institutions are developing new programs and strategies to improve the quality, quantity and access to PTSD and TBI treatment for veterans, particularly those returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For Monday’s game, the Brewers have also donated thousands of tickets to the USO and the Veteran’s Administration that they have distributed to veterans, active military members and their families. The pregame presentation will also feature military honor guards from a number of branches, multiple simultaneous first pitches by active military reservists and other military family members, and the national anthem will be performed by SSG Korin Saal.

Finally, you can pick up your own Brewers Memorial Day fitted cap ($45), jersey ($220), or t-shirt ($35), each featuring a special Desert Camo design. Stop by the Brewers Team Stores at Miller Park or shop online at brewers.com to purchase yours.

MLB will donate 100% of its net proceeds from sales of the caps and jerseys to Welcome Back Veterans as part of its contribution to the program.

ESPN’s #UNIBATTLE: Vote Brewers!

Remember Brewers fans about a year ago when you voted Miller Park the Best Ballpark in MLB on ESPN.com’s poll?  You came out in record numbers and upset the rest of the field as Miller Park was named the best ballpark in MLB thanks to the passionate Brewers fanbase.  Some didn’t really like that decision, but it showed how much pride Brewers fans have in their team and ballpark. Well, it looks like the Brewers could use your help again in ESPN.com’s “Battle of the Uniforms.”

This is great because it includes two of my favorite things: uniforms and bracket style tournaments.  This topic always sparks interesting discussions and debates.

A bracket-style online vote has been set up to decide what MLB team has the best uniforms in all of Baseball.  The Brewers are opening up the underdogs as an 11 seed facing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the “tournament.”  Although the Brewers have a number of alternate uniforms, the voting is based only on the official home “whites” and road “grays.”

Voting is open now on ESPN.com and the first round ends tomorrow morning.  In addition, fans can tweet their thoughts on the bracket using the #UNIBATTLE hashtag.

Brewers Go For the Gold and Announce Gold Alternate Jersey

The Brewers go for the gold every season. Each of the 30 flags atop the Commissioner’s Trophy awarded to the World Series Champion are adorned in gold and it is the Brewers goal to one day have that trophy at Miller Park. With that in mind, the Brewers will be “going for gold” in a new gold alternate jersey next season.

This exciting Brewers uniform news was announced by the team early this morning. The new gold-colored alternate jersey will be worn on occasion beginning with the 2013 season. The jersey tops will officially make their debut by players and coaches on Sunday at “Brewers On Deck” at the Delta Center in Milwaukee.

Here is a rendering of the gold Brewers jersey.

The gold jersey will feature “Brewers” in blue script across the front (think about the “Cerveceros” jersey that the team has worn in recent years). It will join the primary white home jersey, the primary gray road jersey, the alternate blue “Brewers” jersey, the alternate blue “Milwaukee” jersey and the retro “Brewers” pinstripe jersey.

The last time the Brewers introduced an alternate jersey was 2010 when the team added the alternate blue “Milwaukee” jersey.

“Our players have worn a similar gold-colored jersey on our annual ‘Cerveceros Day,’ and the feedback from fans and players has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger. “We believe that this jersey will be a very popular style, both on the field and at our retail locations.”

The players did react positively to the gold “Cerveceros” jersey the team has worn–the team won the only game they were worn last year. While normally, it is up to the starting pitcher to decide what uniform the team will wear for any game, baseball players can be very superstitious. If the team has a winning record in the gold jerseys, you could see them pretty regularly next year.

It was no coincidence that the team played the most games and had the best record–35-17–in the blue “Brewers” uniforms in 2012. Part of that could be due to the strong home record the team had, but the team went 10-10 in the home whites–proving there might be a little superstition when choosing a jersey.

The new uniform top will be available exclusively at Brewers On Deck and the Brewers Team Store by Majestic at Miller Park beginning Sunday. The Brewers Team Store by Majestic at Miller Park will exclusively carry the Brewers gold jersey through February 3. Those who purchase a gold Brewers jersey at Brewers on Deck will receive a free Brewers gold jersey chocolate bar.
