Call Me Maybe?

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and the Brewers have a number of activities to get in the giving spirit.

This afternoon–along with a number of my Brewers front office counterparts–I will be manning the phones for the WISN-TV 12 Food For Families Food Bank from 3 – 5 p.m.  We will be at the WISN-TV studios answering phones and taking donations that will benefit the Hunger Task Force.

I’m not sure the phone number to call to donate quite yet, but when I get that number, I will be sure to update the blog.  If you call in, make sure to ask for me!  I want to make sure those phones are ringing all afternoon with generous donations for the Hunger Task Force.  Tune in and make a donation!

Yesterday, Brewers bullpen catcher Marcus Hanel, and his wife, Jill, distributed 300 coats for children at Gilbert Stuart School on Milwaukee’s north side through their “Koos for Kids” organization.

Tomorrow, a number of Brewers staff and players will be at Helfaer Field from 8 – 11 a.m. collecting food for the Brewers Community Foundation, CBS 58 and Hunger Task Force Food Drive.  While Brewers personnel will staff the Helfaer Field drop off location in the morning, food can be dropped off at tomorrow between 4:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Each vehicle stopping by to donate food items will receive a Brewers bobblehead, a gift bag and other items while supplies last. A number of Brewers special guests and CBS 58 News Team members will be on hand throughout the day to collect donations.

Finally, don’t forget about another opportunity to help Brewers Community Foundation and the Hunger Task Force through an online auction of player-designed “turkey hands.”  Jim Henderson, Jonathan Lucroy, Brandon Kintzler and Tyler Thornburg put their creative talents to work on the traditional Thanksgiving art project of hand-drawn “turkey hands.”  The auction will conclude on Sunday at 11:59 p.m. CT.

The Thanksgiving holiday is great time to show how thankful we all are for what we have and a perfect way to do that is giving back to your community in any way that you can.  Stay tuned to the blog for updates from the phone bank this afternoon and from the food drive at Helfaer Field tomorrow!

Brewers Community Foundation Teams Up With Community Groups to Deliver 500 Thanksgiving Meals to Area Families

A Thanksgiving tradition continued this morning in Milwaukee as the Milwaukee Brewers Community Foundation partnered with 1290 WMCS-AM, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department, Feeding America and the Hunger Task Force to make sure 500 area families had everything they needed for Thanksgiving dinner.

Milwaukee Brewers television play-by-play announcer Brian Anderson, Brewers alum Larry Hisle and Executive Director of the Brewers Community Foundation Cecelia Gore joined 1290 WMCS Operations Manager TJ Jackson, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke and representatives from Feeding America and Hunger Task Force for a press conference outside the 1290 WMCS headquarters on Sherman Blvd. and Capitol Dr. in Milwaukee.

Following the press conference, the group traveled with a number of baskets to the Guest House, a Milwaukee homeless shelter for men, and the Meta House, a substance abuse treatment program dedicated to helping women.  Later in the morning, the rest of the Thanksgiving food baskets were picked up by families who registered with the radio station to receive the meals.

Photos from today’s event were taken by Michael Goelzer, Milwaukee Brewers Photos.

This is the 18th year that the radio station has held this special holiday meal program and the Milwaukee Brewers and Brewers Community Foundation have teamed up with 1290 WMCS to help solicit funds, food and family recipients.  Families are identified through letters and e-mails sent to the radio station.  Local community service organizations can also recommend people in need.

In addition to Brewers Community Foundation and 1290 WMCS, Feeding America is donating food boxes which include fixings for the families (dressing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, macaroni and cheese, canned yams, corn, green beans, fruit, applesauce and cake mixes).  The Hunger Task Force is donating turkeys and fresh produce.

Brewers Thanksgiving Basket Delivery

Yesterday, I participated in the Brewers Community Foundation’s Annual Thanksgiving Basket Delivery.  The BCF along with its partners, 1290 WMCS-AM, the Milwaukee County Sheriff, Feeding America and Hunger Task Force presented 500 full Thanksgiving meals for those in need.  The recipients of the meals were selected by WMCS-AM through letters and e-mails submitted to the station.

After a short press conference at Miller Park, we loaded up some boxes and headed over to the Guest House just north of Marquette University’s campus.  The Guest House is a homeless shelter for men that gives more to men than a roof over their head, but also works to find jobs, health care, education and other social services for its guests.

We delivered over 15 full Thanksgiving meals to the Guest House that included everything you need for the traditional Thanksgiving meal–dressing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, cake mix, canned yams, corn, green beans, fruit, and, of course, a turkey.  Cecelia Gore, Executive Director of the Brewers Community Foundation presented the Guest House with a $10,000 contribution.  It was a great gesture in a time of giving.

Special thanks go out to Brewers television play-by-play announcer Brian Anderson and former Brewers great Larry Hisle for their assistance yesterday.  You could see the excitement in the eyes of the recipients at the Guest House yesterday when they saw the former All-Star slugger (who is now an All-Star in the community).  Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke and numerous representatives from 1290 WMCS-AM were also on hand for yesterday’s delivery.

The remaining meals will be distributed today and tomorrow by WMCS-AM.

Click this link to see some of the video highlights from yesterday.

From the Brewers family to your family, have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving!
