Brewers Received National Sports Forum ADchievement Overall Award of Advertising Excellence for Third Year in a Row

I’ve been spending the last couple of days in Dallas, Texas at the National Sports Forum (NSF), the largest annual cross gathering of team sports marketing, sales, promotions and event entertainment executives – from throughout the broad spectrum of teams and leagues, (i.e. NFL, MLB, MLS, NBA, NHL, Minor Leagues, Racing, Colleges, etc.), in North America.

I’ve attended this conference for six years now and it is one of my favorites. It’ s always great to reconnect with counterparts from other teams and leagues and share ideas and best practices.

As part of the conference, the NSF also hosts the ADchievement Awards, which recognize the year’s most outstanding advertising campaigns in sports across eight categories. The competition brings in hundreds of submissions from the top teams, agencies, leagues and collegiate athletics across the industry. And, today, I am proud to share that the Brewers were  selected as the recipient of the 2014 National Sports Forum ADchievement Overall Award of Excellence, marking the third consecutive season that the Brewers have received this award. NSF Awards In addition to the NSF ADchievement Overall Award of Excellence, the Milwaukee Brewers and Brewers Community Foundation were finalists in seven of eight categories, winning two of those categories: Best Social/Mobile Media for our 2013 10-Packs/Countdown to Opening Day (#SeeUApril1) campaign (which also won a Gold award at the 2013 PromaxBDA Sports Media Marketing Awards in New York City last November), and Best In-Stadium/In Arena for the two-minute film capturing the Milwaukee Brewers game day experience that we played in the ballpark at the start of games last season. (Click here to watch a 5-minute version.)

The #SeeUApril1 campaign was produced by our in-house marketing team. Captivate Digital Cinema, the filmmakers of the 2013 Brewers commercial campaign, worked in conjunction with our marketing team on the film. There is a tremendous amount of talent in all of the submissions we see each year at the ADchievement Awards and we’re honored to be in such great company. Kudos to our entire marketing team! The NSF wraps up tonight in Dallas; a huge thank you to the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks and Stars for hosting us–it’s been tremendous as always. Here are just a few photos I thought I’d share with y’all:

Brewers Pick Up Off-Field Awards

A little pat on the back for the Brewers front office as the club recently picked up a four awards as a result of advertising and marketing campaigns.

For the second consecutive year, the Milwaukee Brewers picked up two awards at the 2013 PromaxBDA Sports Media Marketing Awards in New York City on Tuesday.

The Brewers were awarded the “Gold” in the “Best Print, Poster or Outdoor” category for the Milwaukee Brewers Countdown to Opening Day (#SEEUAPRIL1) advertising campaign.  This particular marketing effort featured an ongoing countdown to the 2013 Brewers Opening Day at Miller Park on April 1.  The campaign was capped off with an ad seen here.

The team received the “Silver” in the same category for the Brewers Community Foundation What Is Good? campaign. This campaign, created by 2-Story, highlighted the non-profit organizations that Brewers players, fans and others support through contributions to Brewers Community Foundation. An example of one of the What Is Good? ad can be seen here.

Both Brewers awards came in the “Teams” category.

“We are honored to be recognized for a second consecutive year, and we’re proud of the creative efforts of our marketing team that went into completing these campaigns,” said Rick Schlesinger, Brewers Chief Operating Officer.

Last year, the Brewers picked up two awards for their 2012 television advertising campaign.  The overall campaign picked up the “Silver” award in the “Television/Video: Best TV/Video Campaign” and the Glare spot received the “Gold” award in the “Television/Video: Best Use of Humor” category.

In addition, Captivate Digital Cinema, the filmmakers of the 2013 Brewers commercial campaign, won two Emmy Awards at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences ceremony for the Chicago/Midwest chapter, which was held recently in Chicago. The awards were for the Brewers 2013 television spots.

The 2013 Brewers commercial campaign won “Best Commercial Campaign” and the Game Day Experience film won for “Outstanding Achievement in Sports Program Feature/Segment.”  Producer Amy Johnson accepted the awards for Captivate Digital Cinema.

“On behalf of the Brewers, I congratulate Captivate Digital Cinema for being recognized with the Emmy Awards for its extraordinary work on our Brewers commercials,” said Schlesinger.  “While working in conjunction with our marketing efforts, the commercials provide a unique behind-the-scenes view of the team and capture the excitement that our fans bring to Miller Park on a regular basis.  We look forward to working with Captivate Digital Cinema again in 2014 to integrate the excitement of Miller Park and Brewers Baseball into our multi-platform marketing programs.”

It’s a Major Award! Trip to NYC Successful for Marketing Department

As I mentioned earlier this week, my boss, Kathy, and I were in New York this week for a trip bookended by two separate award ceremonies… and we’re pleased to tell you it was a very successful trip!

ProMaxBDA’s 2012 Sports Media Marketing Awards took place on Tuesday night at the Capitale in New York City.

This event recognizes the best and brightest in sports media marketing, promotion and design. Earlier this fall, we had learned that our 2012 TV campaign was a finalist in the “Television/Video: Best  TV/Video Campaign” category and that one spot in particular was a finalist for “Television/Video: Best Use of Humor.”

So, Kathy and I made plans to represent our marketing team at the event, along with Ellen Homb and Jessica Himsel from 2-Story, the agency that worked with us to produce these spots.

After a nice cocktail reception, dinner and program hosted by Jay Mohr, we are pleased to tell you that our suitcases were a little heavier coming back because we brought home both a SILVER and a GOLD award!

We were awarded the “Gold” in the “Television/Video: Best Use of Humor” category for the “Glare” television spot.  This particular ad featured Ryan Braun, Yovani Gallardo, Jonathan Lucroy and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Watch it here:

Other finalists included the Boston Bruins, Sporting Kansas City, the National Hockey League and the Philadelphia Flyers.

We received the “Silver” in the “Television/Video: Best TV/Video Campaign” for the entire 2012 television campaign that featured various Brewers players and Rodgers.

In this category, the “Gold” went to the National Hockey League for their campaign promoting the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Other finalists included the Philadelphia Eagles, the Toronto Blue Jays and NFL Sunday Ticket.

A total of five spots made up our 2012 television advertising campaign.  In addition to “Glare,” the other four spots were: “3-Step Drop,” “Bad Reception,” “Best Guy” and “Other Job.”  The full collection of spots can be viewed at

The production of all of our 2012  television spots was handled by the creative team of 2-Story and Metaphystico. The shoot occurred in late February at the our Spring Training facility in Maryvale, Arizona.

Both  of these awards came in the Teams, Leagues, Conferences and Collegiate Category.

We are very honored to be recognized and are humbled to be awarded both a silver and a gold with so much talent in this industry. Again, we would like to thank 2-Story and Metaphystico for their hard work as well. It’s a total team effort.

The second award ceremony took place this morning as part of the Ivy Sports Symposium at Columbia University, where I was extremely humbled once again when I was recognized as a member of the 10 NEXT Class of 2012, an annual award recognizing a distinct group of 10 individuals in the sports business industry under the age of 30 that have achieved a high level of success at a young age. The Symposium was an excellent opportunity to meet the rest of my class, as well as many other esteemed members of the sports industry, and all day, I basked in their greatness and again, felt incredibly honored to be part of this group. I also met the future of the sports world, as many students from all around the country also attended this event.

It was a whirlwind trip, but definitely fruitful and Kathy and were I proud to represent the Brewers at these events. Now, the bar has been raised for 2013–bring it on!
