Give Yourself a Virtual Moustache in Celebration of “Birthday Weekend at Bernie’s,” presented by Southwest Airlines
As I’ve noted over the past few weeks, this season marks the 40th Anniversary since Bernie Brewer was introduced as the mascot of the Milwaukee Brewers and to celebrate, we’ll be hosting “Birthday Weekend at Bernie’s” presented by Southwest Airlines from Friday, August 16 through Sunday, August 18 as the Crew takes on the Cincinnati Reds. A variety of activities are scheduled for this entire weekend at Miller Park, including giveaways, prizes, sing-a-longs and much more.
And, as the most popular Major League mascot on Twitter, Bernie is very tech-savvy so we have several ways fans can join in the celebration online.
The most fun is a new virtual moustache photo app that we launched today:
Visit the photo app by clicking here. Upload your photo, add a ‘stache and/or the logo, then share it with your friends! If you Tweet it, post it to Facebook and/or Instagram, be sure to use the hashtag #LUVBernie and include a special birthday greeting for Bernie as we’ll be compiling the greetings for him to view at brewers.com/luvbernie.
Here’s some more fun I had with the app today…
I hope you have as fun as I did, playing with the app and sending Bernie your best!

As I wrote yesterday, this season marks the 40th Anniversary since Bernie Brewer was introduced as the mascot of the Milwaukee Brewers and to celebrate, we’ll be hosting “Birthday Weekend at Bernie’s” presented by Southwest Airlines from Friday, August 16 through Sunday, August 18 as the Crew takes on the Cincinnati Reds. A variety of activities are scheduled for this entire weekend at Miller Park, including giveaways, prizes, sing-a-longs and much more. (For a complete list of activities click here.)
And, beginning tonight, fans will have the opportunity to sign a giant card for Bernie when attending games leading up to his birthday, beginning this Friday. The birthday card will be located near the Southwest Airlines Nuttiest Fan display in the right-field corner on the Field Level.
Bernie’s best friends signed the card first and we hope to see your name on there soon, too!

On Friday, August 16, the first 20,000 fans to enter the gates at Miller Park will receive a Bernie Brewer can coozie, compliments of Southwest Airlines. The giveaways continue throughout the weekend as roundtrip tickets on Southwest Airlines will be given away during each inning of the game on Saturday, August 17 (two roundtrip tickets will be awarded to a lucky fan each inning).
Two special events are planned for Sunday, August 18 with the Kids Eat Free promotion and the Party on the Plaza. The Party on the Plaza will take place before Sunday’s game from 11am – 1pm with clowns, face painting, tailgate games, music and appearances by Bernie Brewer, the Klement’s Famous Racing Sausages and other local mascots, including Fang (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers), Roscoe (Milwaukee Admirals, Pounce (UW-Milwaukee), and more. Then, upon entering the ballpark, vouchers will be distributed to fans 16 and under, good for one free Klement’s hot dog, small Pepsi product and Blue Bunny ice cream for the Kids Eat Free promotion.
Additionally, fans will have the opportunity to sign a giant card for Bernie when attending games leading up to his birthday, beginning this Friday. The birthday card will be located near the Southwest Airlines Nuttiest Fan display in the right-field corner on the Field Level.

- Tweet messages and/or photos on Instagram using the hashtag #LUVBernie. Fans can visit Brewers.com/luvbernie to see a compilation.
- In August, we will launch an app which will allow fans to integrate a digital Bernie Brewer mustache into photos and post them in celebration of Bernie’s birthday.
- Follow @Bernie_Brewer on Twitter! Bernie’s closing in on 31,000 followers at the time of this writing–wouldn’t it be great to get him to 40,000 by his big weekend?!

We’re also pleased to work with Southwest Airlines on this celebration, as there is a mutual “luv” between the two (if you’ll recall, Bernie made his trip to Spring Training thanks to Southwest earlier this year:
We hope you’ll join us as we pay tribute to Bernie over the next month!
Last week at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport, Carlos Gomez and Jim Henderson took on some unusual jobs as they Traded Places with a crew from Southwest Airlines.
Southwest Airlines invited Henderson and Gomez to surprise some unsuspecting customers as they did everything that Southwest employees do on a daily basis. Marshal in planes, ride a tug, make boarding announcements and take boarding passes–it was all a part of the special event. It was great to see the look on the faces of passengers and airport workers when walking through the terminal with two Brewers players.
Below is a great video recapping the activities from that day courtesy of Southwest Airlines. Henderson and Gomez team up for some great on board, pre-flight announcements which is one of the highlights of the clip. Also, Southwest and the Brewers partnered with Make-A-Wish to make two dreams come true–meeting some players from her favorite team and taking a trip to Orlando.
The cliché “one of a kind…” is heard all too often, but the “2013 Milwaukee Brewers Ultimate Fan Experience” is something that would be next to impossible to replicate.
Through the sweepstakes, one lucky fan will be chosen to receive the following prize package:
– A Bob Uecker Game-Worn Sweater—a colorful, warm piece of history worn by a colorful man. The sweater comes complete with a Major League Baseball authentication hologram that shows Mr. Baseball wore the sweater during a Brewers radio broadcast this year.
– Yovani Gallardo’s Game-Worn 2013 Opening Day Jersey that was donned by the Brewers righthander for his fourth consecutive Opening Day start. The jersey is authenticated by Major League Baseball.
– Four Round-Trip Southwest Airlines Tickets between Milwaukee (either to or from) and any location served by Southwest Airlines.
– Four Field Diamond Box Tickets to any 2013 Milwaukee Brewers regular season game at Miller Park.
– A Chance to Slide Down Bernie Brewer’s Slide along with three of your friends.
– Bob Uecker Meet and Greet – Your group of four will meet “Ueck” on the field during batting practice before a Brewers game at Miller Park. You will then be able to watch batting practice on the field and have your photo taken in the Brewers dugout.
– Your Own Bobblehead – The Brewers will create a bobblehead in your image and produce the item for your personal collection.
Sweepstakes tickets are just $1, and the more times you enter, the better chance of winning. Tickets will be available at brewers.com/ultimatesweeps beginning today at 10 a.m. CT through Tuesday, June 11 at 10 a.m. CT. No purchase necessary. Entries are also accepted by writing to: Brewers Ultimate Fan Experience Sweepstakes, c/o Brewers Community Foundation, One Brewers Way, Milwaukee, WI 53214.
“We wanted to offer a package that was truly unique, and it all starts with an item like Ueck’s game-worn sweater,” said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger. “We think this will be a very popular contest with an appeal to Brewers fans of all ages.”
The winning name will be drawn on or around Monday, June 17. Net proceeds from the sweepstakes will benefit the programs supported by the Brewers Community Foundation. For complete rules and more information, please visit brewers.com/ultimatesweeps.
As exemplified by the VIP treatment Bernie Brewer received on his trip to Spring Training this year, it’s obvious that Southwest Airlines really loves Bernie Brewer and we know you do, too!
So, when you’re at Miller Park this season, be sure to visit the Southwest Airlines Bernie Brewer photo attraction located down the first-base line on the Field Level concourse. On Wednesday, I caught up with Bernie regarding his impending trip to Spring Training and today, I’m pleased to announce that not only have pitchers and catchers reported to Spring Training, but Bernie has as well!
Yes, that’s right, this year, Bernie is joining the #CACTUSCREW by taking in some games down here in Phoenix, Arizona.

Without further ado, here is the official John and Cait preview of Brewers On Deck.
Below is a map of the event at the Delta Center that will help you plan your day.
Spend 10 Minutes: Walking through the Brewers Museum. OK, full disclosure here. I have spent a lot of time building this “museum” from an simple idea and pretty much no direction. I started collecting stuff from around Miller Park and it has grown to something I am very proud of. It grows a bit every year, but has some pretty cool regular features. I’m a history buff and baseball history is so fascinating to me. Take 10 minutes to enjoy some Brewers history! It will be set up all day and I will be there most of the day so walk through at some point and say hello.
Don’t Miss: “The Brewlywed Game” on the Main Stage at 11:30. The Brewers take on “The Newlywed Game” will be very entertaining. Stick around afterwards for a question and answer session with Mark Attanasio, Doug Melvin, Gord Ash, Tom Gorzelanny, Michael Gonzalez and Burke Badenhop.
Best New Addition: This year, there will be a “Bonus Stage” for autographs. Located near the Main Stage, select players will appear in 30 minute sessions and will sign autographs for fans. The schedule will be posted next to the stage and will include a mix of Brewers Major League players and future stars (you never know who will be the next Brewers All-Star!). Another new addition will come at the team store where fans can purchase t-shirts with the “Design a YOUniform” winning design and the new gold Brewers uniform.
Hidden Gem: The Brewers Community Foundation live auction. Some great items up for bid at 1:10 p.m. at the Interactive Stage. Bid on an opportunity to watch batting practice on the field before a Brewers game or the opportunity to “steal” 2nd base during a 2013 Brewers game. Some unique collectibles and opportunities are available at the auction.
A Reminder: About the Live Brewers.com webchat with Mark Rogers and Burke Badenhop at 2:30 p.m. at the Interactive Stage. Follow along if you cannot attend the event via social media by using the hashtag #BrewersOnDeck and submit questions below to Rogers and Badenhop.
Spend 15 Minutes: The results of our “Design a YOUniform” contest will be unveiled by Brewers pitcher John Axford from 10:15-10:30am on the Klement’s Main Stage. The three finalists (Ron Verrecchio from Cantonsville, MD; Ben Peters from Richfield, MN; and Nicholas Fout from Madison, WI have all been invited to appear at Brewers On Deck to discuss their designs as they angle to win a trip to Spring Training. As John mentioned, the team store will have t-shirts with the “Design a YOUniform” winning design available as well!
Don’t Miss: “The Milwacky Squares” Game Show, hosted by Brewers television announcer, Brian Anderson, on the Main Stage at 1:45pm. The Brewers spin-off of “Hollywood Squares” will be very entertaining as it features Brewers Hall-of-Fame Radio Announcer Bob Uecker as the center square, along with Brewers players and several Hollywood guests–including Dennis Haskins aka “Mr. Belding” from Saved By the Bell and “Flight Time” Lang of the Harlem Globetrotters.
Best New Addition: I might be a tad biased, but I’m pretty psyched about the #BREWERSONDECK Instagram/Twitter contest! Make sure you take plenty of photos from this year’s event at several of the photo ops stages or around the event in general. Then, post them to Instagram and/or Tweet them to @Brewers or @Bernie_Brewer using the hashtag #BREWERSONDECK for your chance to win tickets to a 2013 home game!
Hidden Gem: Again–the Brewers Social Media area–that’s where I’ll be when I’m not running around. :) Come get a special @Brewers item while they last and check out our exciting new digital fan map–Brewers Fans on the Fly, presented by Southwest Airlines, which will be officially unveiled at the event (more to come on the blog later about that, too!).
A Reminder: Don’t forget that the Hunger Task Force will be on hand at the event to collect your non-perishable food items. Bring your donations and look for them near the Brewers Community Foundation area.
See you on Sunday!
-John and Cait
If you were at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport today and saw some things that were out of the ordinary in Concourse D, your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you.
Yes, that was Yovani Gallardo guiding a Southwest Boeing 737 into gate D52. Yes, that was Bernie Brewer and the Famous Racing Sausages unloading luggage. And, yes, that was Jonathan Lucroy riding the tug, pushing Southwest flight 584 off to Phoenix.
Southwest Airlines, the Official Airline of the Milwaukee Brewers, invited Gallardo, Lucroy, Bernie and the Famous Racing Sausages to help out at the airport for an hour today. I accompanied Yovani and Jonathan to the airport today for their visit and it was an enjoyable day for everyone.
The entire operation is like clockwork. The ground crew can’t afford to be late or inefficient with their jobs as getting passengers to their destination quickly and safely is priority number one.
The plane landed in Milwaukee for a brief “stopover” before continuing on to Phoenix (where the Brewers will play this weekend). When the plane landed Yovani helped the ground crew guide the plane into the gate. He also later helped with luggage. At the same time, Jonathan was up at the gate greeting passengers who weren’t continuing on to Phoenix.
When it was time for the next group of passengers to get on the plane, Jonathan was right there making announcements and Yovani was scanning tickets. After the plane was loaded up, the Brewers battery returned to the tarmac to push the plane from the gate and send it off to Phoenix. Landed, unloaded, reloaded and back in the air all in about one hour.
“It was neat to see the behind-the-scenes operations here,” Lucroy said of the job shadow. “I was really amazed at how fast everything went today.”
I’ve always loved airplanes and flying, so this was a treat for me too. It was great to see what it takes to get a plane to the gate on time and back up in the air. Even with the distraction of Yovani, Jonathan and the mascots, the crew knew where to be and when to be there to carry out their jobs.
Special thanks goes out to the Brewers Corporate Marketing Department, the crew from Southwest Airlines and our friends at Gen. Mitchell International Airport for helping with today’s event.
