RYAN BRAUN NAMED BREWERS NOMINEE FOR THE 2016 ROBERTO CLEMENTE AWARD

Major League Baseball today announced that Ryan Braun has been named the Milwaukee Brewers 2016 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, the most prominent individual player award bestowed by MLB.

The Roberto Clemente Award is the annual recognition of a player from each MLB Club who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

Each Club nominates one current player to be considered for the Roberto Clemente Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character. Wednesday, September 7th marks the fifteenth annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy and to officially acknowledge local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award.  As part of the league-wide celebration, the Roberto Clemente Day logo will appear on the bases and official dugout lineup cards and a special tribute video will be played in ballparks.

Braun is one of the 30 Club finalists for the annual award.

Braun has provided a $100,000 contribution to Brewers Community Foundation (BCF) during the 2016 season.  He has generously supported the publication of Sharp’s annual book and the building of a mural focused on literacy, the Habitat for Humanity garage build, 15 player/coach scholarships and is a co-presenting sponsor of the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW) annual Walk/Run.  Ryan participates in meet and greets for BCF, provides autographed items in support of charitable endeavors and has helped promote the 50/50 raffle and other fundraising events.

Beginning on Roberto Clemente Day, fans can participate in the process of selecting the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award on social media for the first time by posting voting hashtags to Twitter and Facebook. Fans can vote for Braun by using #VOTEBraun.

To enhance Roberto Clemente Day and celebrate Clemente’s enduring legacy in 2016, Major League Baseball worked with the 30 Clubs to establish SEAT 21.  SEAT 21 will be a designated seat in each ballpark on Roberto Clemente Day (or alternate home game for Clubs on the road) dedicated to a well-known or local hero originally from the community who will be recognized in addition to the Club Clemente Award nominee. Recognizing individuals who embody the humanitarian spirit of Roberto Clemente is a natural extension of the current honor bestowed upon players each year and gives MLB and the Clubs the opportunity to further extend the message of service and commitment.

The Brewers SEAT 21 nominee is Griselda Aldrete, President & CEO of Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee (HPGM).  Aldrete will take part of the on-field recognition with Ryan and will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to Wednesday’s game against the Cubs.

The concept of honoring Major League players for their philanthropic work was created in 1971 as the “Commissioner’s Award,” but was renamed to the “Roberto Clemente Award” in 1973 in honor of the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Each September since 2002, Major League Baseball has commemorated Roberto Clemente Day.

Rickie Weeks Named Brewers Nominee for the 2012 Roberto Clemente Award; #VOTERICKIE!

Today Major League Baseball and Chevrolet, the official vehicle of Major League Baseball, announced that Rickie Weeks was named the Brewers 2012 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet.

Today marks the eleventh annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy and to officially recognize local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet.

Rickie is one of the 30 Club finalists for the annual award, which recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement.  The award pays tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. The Award is named for the 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Each season, Rickie makes financial contributions to Brewers Community Foundation, the official charity of the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club, to support activities and programs targeted to youth recreation, scholarships and education throughout Wisconsin. This summer, he hosted the Team Smile dental clinic that took place at Miller Park, which provided free dental care for 200 children from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. He also made monetary contributions to the YMCA in support of their swimming program, which teaches central city kids how to swim.

Rickie has also partnered with Brewers Community Foundation to serve as a sponsor for the 2012-2013 “Teach for America, Sponsor-A-Teacher” initiative in Milwaukee and he has sponsored the production of the play – Jackie Robinson Story, which will debut in 2013 by Children’s First Stage Theatre Company.

In addition, since 2008, Rickie has financially supported the Rickie’s Rookies Ticket Program, which provides hundreds of game tickets and t-shirts to youth groups and organizations throughout Milwaukee and Wisconsin; he has also supported the American Diabetes Association, the Beckum-Stapleton Little League and the 2011 Fatherhood Initiative Trip where he hosted fathers and their children on a one-day trip to St. Louis for a ballgame, among other charitable events.

On Saturday, September 29 (Fan Appreciation Night, presented by Chevrolet), Rickie will be recognized as the Brewers 2012 Roberto Clemente Award nominee in a pregame ceremony at Miller Park.

Beginning today, fans can vote to select the national award recipient by visiting MLB.com/ClementeAward to vote for one of the 30 Club nominees. Participating fans will be automatically registered for a chance to win a trip to the 2012 World Series, where the national winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet will be announced. Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 14, and the winner of the fan poll will receive one vote among those cast by a selection panel.
