It Was An Interesting Office Lunch at Miller Park Today

The lunch hour at Miller Park today wasn’t your normal lunch hour.  While we do work at Miller Park and it is pretty common to see different events on the field throughout the day, today’s lunch event on the field was a little out of the ordinary.  OK, throw in the Famous Racing Sausages lifting a 575 pound tire and scaling a wall, it was definitely out of the ordinary.

In order to stir up some excitement for the upcoming Reebok Spartan Race on Saturday, November 2 at Miller Park, race organizers set up a number of obstacles for media and front office staff to experience before the big race.  It will be the first Spartan Race in the state of Wisconsin and the just the fourth inside an MLB ballpark.  These extreme races have been increasingly popular over the last few years and we are happy to host one at Miller Park.

The obstacles previewed today are versions of what are traditional to Spartan Races.  You will never see a course map (the Miller Park race is a 3-mile “Sprint”) or layout of what the obstacles are on the course.  It is their way of telling participants you never know what will be thrown at you and to always be ready.

The Miller Park race will differ from traditional Spartan Races in that it won’t include any mud, fire or water, but will allow participants the race through obstacles through the concourse.  It is more of a “cross fit” style race.  This is a very unique opportunity for fans to experience Miller Park like never before.

Reebok Spartan Race, voted Outside Magazine’s Best Obstacle Race in 2012, is the world’s leading obstacle racing series and the first of its kind to have global rankings. With 350,000 participants in 2012 and 60 events planned for 2013, Reebok Spartan Race is making this one of the fastest growing sports in the world.  The entire event will take place inside Miller Park allowing participants to compete in the same stadium as the Brewers.

“Based on the huge success of our Fenway Park and Citi Field events in Boston and New York respectively, we recognized the appeal of the more intimate stadium setting,” said Spartan Race founder Joe DeSena. “Fans will get to experience Miller Park in a rare, up-close-and-personal way as the course winds throughout the entire stadium – including stands and concourses – and ends on the field.”

“Spartan Race’s mission is to rip people off their couches and do what we as human beings were made to do: run, jump, sweat and climb,” DeSena asserted. “Our stadium races will offer a unique setting to do that.”

The Reebok Spartan 2013 calendar will include several Sprint Races at some of the nation’s favorite professional sports stadiums.  Other confirmed sites included Citi Field, in Flushing, N.Y., April 13 that brought 12,000 competitors, Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Penn., September 28 and a return to Fenway Park, in Boston, Mass. Saturday, November 16.

“Fans, stay tuned for announcements about future events coming to a stadium near you,” De Sena noted, adding that locations are being selected that already have a strong Reebok Spartan following.  “We’re picking places that are passionate about their sports,” he continued, “plus, we want to give our most loyal fans multiple opportunities within a calendar year to compete in a Spartan Race.”

Adult heats will start at 8 a.m. continuing in roughly one-minute, 10-person waves throughout the day, with individual start times assigned at the event. As with all Spartan events, points will be awarded and elite performers can win entry to a larger, even tougher Super Spartan event. The three-mile course is a head-to-head, time trial, speed-style event, with the unique twist of incorporating numerous, challenging obstacles for which Spartan Race is famous.
