Following successful third place finishes in each of the first three months of the season, in July we moved up to second place in the Head & Shoulders “Season of the #Whiff’ contest on Twitter! That means that this year to date, we’ve helped secure a $30,000 donation to local RBI leagues. Overall, Head & Shoulders will reward seven MLB Clubs with the most #Whiff tweets each month with a donation to their local RBI league(s) totaling $40,000.

We’re nearing the end of August and the race is close, but you can help us secure at LEAST third place again.

All you have to do is tweet #WHIFF + @Brewers. Up to 27 #WHIFF + @Brewers tweets per user per day will count toward out monthly total.

The RBI program is the MLB youth initiative designed to give young people from urban and underserved communities the opportunity to play baseball and softball, encourage academic success and achievement, and teach important life lessons and values.

The MLB Club winner of the overall competition will earn a bonus donation worth $20,000 to their local RBI league(s). The winning Club will be announced during the 2014 MLB World Series – stay tuned to find out who will bring home the highest donation!

Brewers “Beyond the Diamond” Community Initiative Returns in 2014

Today, we announced the return of the organization’s community initiative called “Beyond the Diamond, which features a series of community outreach events that will take place throughout the season. The program is built around a partnership between Brewers players, coaches, alumni, Brewers Wives and team personnel working hands-on in the community.  The community events are funded in part by Brewers Community Foundation and focus on the areas of health, education, recreation and basic needs.

“Beyond the Diamond” events this year will include “S.C.O.R.E. for Excellence Day,” hospital visits, a military luncheon, playground build, Habitat for Humanity project, and more.  Each month from May through August, players, coaches and team personnel will be divided into groups to attend one of the following community outreach events:

  • May 14 (Basic Needs) Habitat Build-a-thon: Brewers players, staff, alumni and Brewers Wives will assist organizers from Habitat for Humanity and residents of the local community to build a home. The event is sponsored by Brewers Community Foundation.
  • May 28 (Education) S.C.O.R.E. for Excellence Day: Brewers players and alumni will visit a middle school and deliver the important message of S.C.O.R.E.  T-shirts and game tickets will be given to the selected school.  S.C.O.R.E., an acronym for School, Community, Opportunities, Role Models and Excellence, is the Brewers signature character education program.
  • June 24 (Recreation) KaBoom Playground Build: Brewers Wives, staff and alumni will assist organizers from KaBoom and residents of the local community to build a new playground at a site to be determined.  Brewers players will also attend the ribbon cutting ceremony, thank the volunteers and take group photos with volunteers and supporters.  The playground build will be sponsored by players, Brewers Wives and Brewers Community Foundation
  • July 11 (Basic Needs) Guest House Room Renovation: Brewers Community Foundation, Brewers players, Brewers Wives and staff will partner with the Guest House, a homeless shelter for men, to build a rainwater collection and picnic shelter for the City Cream Garden Project.
  • July 26 (Recreation) RBI Tournament Visit: Players will visit the central leagues during their tournament and interact with them.  Youth players will take part in a Major League Moment (joining Brewers players on the field) prior to the game and throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
  • August 8 (Education) Wisconsin Humane Society PAL Graduation: Players and Brewers Wives will participate in The Humane Society’s People and Animals Learning (PAL) Graduation.  PAL is a two-week summer camp for underserved Milwaukee children, ages 10-13.  The kids are paired up to train a shelter dog for two weeks, along with other confidence-building and violence prevention activities.  At the graduation, kids show off their new dog-handling skills and receive diplomas.  Players will assist in handing out the diplomas during the graduation ceremony.
  • August 22 (Health) Military Luncheon: Brewers players and alumni will have an exclusive lunch with troops and their families at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center.  Each military branch will be represented.

Boys & Girls Clubs, Milwaukee Brewers and Brewers Community Foundation Announce Revitalization Plans for Sherman Park Baseball Field

Last night, Milwaukee Brewers front office staff, including President of Baseball Operations-General Manager Doug Melvin and his wife, Ellen, along with Craig Counsell, Special Assistant to the General Manager and his wife, Michelle, attended the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s Salute to Youth MVP Dinner & Celebration at the Pfister Hotel. Approximately 500 guests were in attendance at the event, which was co-chaired by Brewers Chief Operating Office, Rick Schlesinger.

At the end of the evening, Brewers Community Foundation presented a check in the amount of $100,000 to support the revitalization of Sherman Park baseball diamond, located in Milwaukee’s central city.The Sherman Park field will be one of only five fields in Greater Milwaukee that can accommodate multiple types of play.

“The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs’ Youth Sports programs is to provide members with access to youth sports that impart valuable life lessons such as teamwork and good sportsmanship as well as develop their leadership skills,” says Vincent Lyles, president & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. “This support from Milwaukee Brewers and Brewers Community Foundation will help do just that. ”

“On behalf of Brewers Community Foundation, the Sherman Park baseball field revitalization is consistent with our mission to positively impact the lives of children and their families in Greater Milwaukee and Wisconsin,” says Cecelia Gore, Executive Director of the Foundation. “This revitalization project will make Little League baseball and softball accessible to Boys & Girls Clubs and other local residents, especially those who live in the inner city.”

In addition to the revitalization project, Milwaukee Brewers and Brewers Community Foundation have been long-time supporters of Boys & Girls Clubs’ RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) Program  [Read more on how you can help support the RBI program here.] as well as Little Brewers softball, which is a statewide program that teaches young children the fundamentals of the game.

Milwaukee County Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture is also a partner in the project. It will be responsible for the field’s maintenance. Boys & Girls Clubs will have exclusive field access for the first two years. Construction will begin this year and the field will be playable for the start of the 2014 baseball and softball season.  It will include a new scoreboard, field fencing and dugouts, infield landscaping and paint field infrastructure.

Located on the corner of N. Sherman Blvd. and W. Burleigh St., the baseball field was highly used and known for its immaculate condition. The revitalized baseball field supports the growth of baseball and softball among central city children. The reconstructed field will be built with adaptive diamond dimensions to accommodate Boys & Girls Clubs baseball and softball programs for young people.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee celebrates 126 years of service. Known as the oldest and largest youth-serving agency in Milwaukee, the Clubs offers high quality after-school and summer programming for children ages 5-18, focusing on those who have major life obstacles, most often poverty. The Clubs operates 36 sites, which include six primary locations, 29 school sites, Camp Whitcomb/Mason in Hartland in Hartland. Membership to the Clubs is only $5 per year, per child, but no one is ever turned away based on inability to pay. For more information, visit www.boysgirlsclubs.org.

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig grew up in the area and played baseball on the field.
