Lyle Overbay Serves as Official Ambassador for Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin

Today, Lyle Overbay and Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin (RMHC) donors came together for a milestone event at the Ronald McDonald House in Wauwatosa.

RMHC is in the final stages of an expansion project that will nearly double the size of the existing House with an additional 32 guest rooms, as well as a fitness center, music room and expanded dining facilities. Through July 2014, the campaign has raised $8.4 million toward a financial need of more than $10 million and today, RMHC was excited to announce that Lyle Overbay will serve as the official ambassador for the “home stretch” of the capital campaign to expand.

In honor of his number, RMHC will be counting down to the last 24 days of construction and the completion of the expansion project.

Jean Segura Trades Places With Southwest Airlines

Today at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport, Jean Segura  took on some unusual jobs as he Traded Places with a crew from Southwest Airlines, the Club’s official airline.

Southwest Airlines invited Jean, along with Bernie Brewer and the Klement’s Famous Racing Sausages, to surprise some unsuspecting customers as Jean did everything that Southwest employees do on a daily basis.  Marshal in planes, ride a tug, make boarding announcements and take boarding passes–it was all a part of the special event.  It was great to see the look on the faces of passengers and airport workers when walking through the terminal with Jean and the mascots–and some of the reaction afterward on social media (I’m sure there will be more when they land!).

Brewers Team Up With KaBoom for Playground Build

Today, more than 250 volunteers from the Milwaukee Brewers (including players, coaches, Brewers Wives and front office staff), Brewers Community Foundation, Inc., Our Next Generation, organizers from KaBOOM!, and residents of the Milwaukee community joined forces to give area kids the childhood they deserve by building a new playground at Our Next Generation. The design is based on children’s drawings created at a special design event in April.

Brewers Community Foundation was the lead sponsor of this events as part of its Beyond the Diamond initiative, a series of community outreach events that take place during the season. These events involve partnering with Brewers Community Foundation, players/coaches, Brewers Wives, alumni and team staff, working hands-on in the community. The community events will be funded in part by Brewers Community Foundation and focus on the areas of health, education, recreation and basic needs. Today, the focus was recreation.

The Brewers will take on the Colorado Rockies tonight in the first game of a four-game set, but that didn’t stop members of the team including manager Ron Roenicke, Khris Davis, Yovani Gallardo, Will Smith and bullpen catcher Marcus Hanel from joining the rest of the group at the build site. Here are some photos I captured at today’s event:

A playground is more than a playground. It’s a brain-expander, friend-maker, and muscle-builder. Play is central to a child’s ability to grow into a productive adult. It can transform children from sedentary, bored and solitary to physically, mentally and socially active. Since 1996, KaBOOM! has been dedicated to the bold goal of ensuring that all children get the balance of active play they need to become healthy and successful adults because #playmatters.

In central Milwaukee, where roughly 3 out of 4 children live below the poverty line, kids often lack safe and carefree environments to explore, learn, and grow. The new playground will bring more than 850 kids in Milwaukee one step closer to having the childhood they deserve.

The playground is the second build by the Brewers Community Foundation, Inc. and KaBOOM!. Through this partnership, more children will have the joyful childhood they deserve. The Brewers Community Foundation, Inc. supports KaBOOM! in promoting and protecting a child’s right to active play at home, at school and in the community.

About KaBOOM!

KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most. Children today spend less time playing outdoors than any previous generation, a fact that is having disastrous consequences on their health, achievement levels, and overall well-being. Social entrepreneur Darell Hammond founded non-profit KaBOOM! in 1996 in Washington, D.C. with a vision of creating a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America because children need to play actively every day at home, in school and in their communities. Since then, KaBOOM! has mapped over 90,000 places to play, built more than 2,300 playgrounds, and successfully advocated for play policies in hundreds of cities across the country. KaBOOM! also provides communities with online tools to self-organize and take action to support play on both a local and national level.  For more information, visit www.kaboom.org.
