Brewers and Panthers to Square Off in Exhibition Game in Phoenix in 2015

The Milwaukee Brewers are in the middle of Cactus League play preparing for the upcoming season, but the Club already has one game on their 2015 exhibition slate.  The Brewers today announced plans to play an exhibition game against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team at Maryvale Baseball Park on a date to be determined.

“This game will be great for baseball in the state of Wisconsin,” said Brewers President and General Manager Doug Melvin.  “It’s a good opportunity for our organization to support the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee program, and will give our players a chance to connect with some of the state’s top young amateur talent.”

This is the first time the Brewers have faced a collegiate team in an exhibition game since 1983 when they played the Arizona State University men’s baseball team. It will mark the first time the Brewers have ever played the Panthers in an exhibition.

“We’re very excited about the opportunity to play the Milwaukee Brewers,” UWM Athletic Director Amanda Braun said. “UWM and the Brewers have had a long-standing partnership and we are proud to add to that partnership. The Panthers are the only Division I baseball team in the state, so we are Milwaukee neighbors with the Brewers in the baseball community and this will be a great way to celebrate the start of the season for both of us in 2015. It’s a tremendous opportunity for the team, our fans and the UWM community. It’s also great for Brewers fans and a nice way to bring our alumni together in a fun way in early spring.”

The Panthers play regular season games each year at Miller Park.  This year, the Panthers are set to play at Miller Park on May 15 vs. Wright State after the Brewers game at noon that day. The Panthers compete in the Horizon League and went 29-21 last season, including a Horizon League championship. Their first home game of this season is scheduled for March 26 vs. Edgewood at Henry Aaron Field in Milwaukee.

“First and foremost, I want to start by thanking the Milwaukee Brewers organization for this opportunity,” UWM baseball head coach Scott Doffek said. “I also want to thank Tom Luljak and Amanda Braun for helping to arrange this. This will be a fun day and a great experience for our team. All of our student-athletes look up to the Major League players and aspire to one day play at that level. This will also be a wonderful way to showcase our University and to engage our alumni in Arizona in a unique way.”

In the 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft, the Brewers selected Josh Uhen from UWM in the fifth round.  Uhen was named the Horizon League’s top pro prospect by Baseball America and was the highest-ever draft choice in Panther baseball history.  Five players from the UWM baseball program have been selected by MLB teams over the past three seasons.

Now, back to the last time the Brewers played a college team in an exhibition. In that game versus Arizona State on March 22, 1983 the Brewers won 6-3 behind a three-run homer by Roy Howell.

Collection Drive Added to Tomorrow’s “Ballpark Pup” Public Appearance at Miller Park

For tomorrow morning’s event featuring Hank the Dog at Miller Park, the Brewers are encouraging fans to bring new pet items with them to donate. A “Wish List” is below, and the items collected will be distributed to area animal rescue organizations.

The Brewers also ask that fans leave their pets at home tomorrow as they will not be able to come into Miller Park or the store.

As a reminder, fans will be allowed entry into the Miller Park Hot Corner entrance at 6 am tomorrow, and the Team Store by Majestic will open at 7 am. Hank t-shirts and other memorabilia will be available for the first time to area fans and with the purchase of any Hank item, 20% of the retail price will be donated to the Wisconsin Humane Society. Plus, fans will have an opportunity to meet Hank that morning at Miller Park. (Note: As of 11am CT on 3/18/14, Hank merchandise is now available online as well.)

Hank first appeared at camp on February 17, the day of the first workout for pitchers and catchers. The Brewers have worked closely with the Arizona and Wisconsin Humane Societies since that first day, and their staff provided counsel on how best to care for Hank’s basic needs as he adjusted to his new surroundings. Hank’s circle of caregivers in Phoenix worked tirelessly to make sure that he had the best care possible until his “forever home” was determined.

Assorted additional Hank gear like pennants, locker name plates, buttons and kids gear will also be available.

Hank made frequent appearances at Spring Training games in a concourse booth, where fans lined up for an opportunity to have their photo taken with Hank in exchange for a voluntary donation to the Humane Society. Through these and other opportunities, Hank has already helped raise thousands of dollars to support the cause.

Hank arrived in Milwaukee last night on a Southwest Airlines charter flight.

Kyle Lohse Bobblehead Revealed

As you know, this year, we’ve got our #Brewers14in14… 14 All-Fan Giveaways–8 bobbleheads and 6 t-shirts–during the 2014 season!

As we get images of the bobbles, we’ll unveil them here and across our social media channels.

So far, we’ve revealed the first bobblehead of the season, the Carlos Gomez Gold Glove bobblehead on Sunday, April 27 vs. the Chicago Cubs.

Now, we’ve got the second bobblehead here for you–the Kyle Lohse bobblehead, presented by Toyota, on Sunday, May 11 vs. the New York Yankees.

MB-14-Lohse-Bobble-social

The bobblehead is posed in his windup and features Lohse’s signature goatee.

I caught up with Kyle to get his thoughts on the bobblehead. “It looks pretty cool,” he said…  and then he informed me that he’s never had a bobblehead before. I was incredulous. This is a World Series Champion who was drafted in 1996,  made his Major League debut in 2001, has played in six Major League organizations…and he’s never been immortalized in bobble form?!?

“I guess I finally made it,” he said with a smile.

Individual tickets  are on sale now and the May 11 game is sure to be a hot ticket. Not only is it Kyle Lohse Bobblehead Day, but it is also Mother’s Day, plus we’re playing the Yankees and it’s Brewers fans last chance to see Derek Jeter play at Miller Park before he retires.

In short, you’ll want to visit brewers.com or call (414) 902-4000 to secure yours today!

Photo Day Fun at Maryvale Baseball Park

It was a busy day at Maryvale Baseball Camp with medical meetings where players listened to presentations from team doctors and nutritionists while representatives from Majestic were also on hand to measure players for uniforms.  Mixed in with all of that was photo day!

Photo day is always busy from a media relations perspective as we coordinate the photographers who come in to shoot headshots and posed shots of players while at the same time, ensure all the players go through the stations to get the proper photos taken.  It is an early morning and a long morning, but everything went pretty smoothly this morning and we have some great behind the scenes photos to share.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Photos were taken by media outlets like the Associated Press and USA Today along with the Brewers team photographer Scott Paulus and Topps baseball cards.

In addition, we had fun using the Twitter Mirror, a special Twitter app used by events like the Oscars and the GRAMMYs, which transforms an ordinary iPad into a special selfie station.

We overheard players say “That was my favorite station” and “How much does that cost? I want one of those,” so we think they had fun… but of course, we’ve also got pictures (and a video) to prove it:

Spring Training Equipment Truck Day at Miller Park Means Baseball Is Right Around the Corner

This has been an especially brutal winter in Milwaukee, there is no getting around that.  One sign that Old Man Winter is on his way out is the annual packing of the Brewers equipment truck for Spring Training.

What was once a simple job, is now an event.  An event that is the unofficial start to Spring Training and an event that has everyone thinking Brewers baseball.  Brewers Director of Clubhouse Operations Tony Migliaccio and his staff have planned this day for months, working on inventory of equipment and organizing all the gear to make sure today’s pack goes without a hitch.

The truck left Miller Park today at 3 p.m., packed full with everything the Brewers will need to run the operation at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix.  The truck is scheduled to arrive in Phoenix on Sunday and will be unpacked Monday.  Pitchers and catchers report to camp Saturday, February 15 and the first official workout is Monday, February 17.  Soon enough, the pictures on this blog and the rest of Brewers.com will be showing Brewers players at camp, working out.  Green grass and sunshine is just around the corner.

Check out video from today’s event thanks to Brewers.com reporter Adam McCalvy:

Uecker To Be Honored With Second Miller Park Statue–In the Last Row!

The memory of the Bob Uecker statue unveil at Miller Park is still fresh in our minds.  That celebration was fantastic and it is great to see that statue outside Miller Park next to Robin Yount, Hank Aaron and Commissioner Selig.  Today, the Brewers announced plans for a new Uecker statue at Miller Park.  Unlike the other statues that surround Miller Park’s Home Plate Plaza, this statue will be in the last row—yes, the last row of the Terrace Level at Miller Park.

The statue will pay tribute to the popular Miller Lite “All Stars” ad campaign which featured Uecker’s famous tagline, “I must be in the front row.”  In the commercial, Uecker ended up in the last row—as will this new statue.  The statue will sit atop the Uecker Seats in Miller Park’s Terrace Level (Section 422) and will feature an open seat next to it allowing for a perfect photo opportunity.

“I can’t think of a better place to put this statue,” Uecker said.  “This will be great for fans and even better for pigeons.  You might even be able to see a little part of the field.”

Bob Uecker Statue

The statue was designed by Brian Maughan, the artist of the four statues outside Miller Park on the Home Plate Plaza—Hank Aaron, Allan H. “Bud” Selig, Robin Yount and Uecker.  The statue will be made of bronze, but will also have color effects.

“Bob Uecker is synonymous with the Brewers and his famous ‘I must be in the front row’ tagline is iconic,” said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger.  “This statue will definitely become a destination for fans visiting Miller Park.”

The statue will be dedicated on the afternoon of Friday, April 25 at Miller Park.  More details will be provided closer to that date.  Uecker will be at Brewers On Deck on Sunday at the Wisconsin Center, so I am sure we will hear more of his thoughts on the statue that day!
