Fun Times Had at the “Koos for Kids” Event at Hitters Baseball Academy

Tonight, following the Brewers-Padres game, many Brewers players and coaches headed over to the Hitters Baseball Academy in Racine to take part in a special event benefiting bullpen catcher and Racine native Marcus Hanel’s charity–and raised over $55,000 in the process.

Marcus has always had a desire to help children and so, about 12 years ago, he formed “Koos for Kids,” a charity focusing on helping terminally ill and disadvantaged children in the area.

Fans attending tonight’s event received dinner, autographs from Brewers players, entertainment from the Jesse White Tumblers, and the opportunity to participate in auctions and raffles. Of course proceeds from the event went to the Koos for Kids organization, where they are used to give back to the community.

Over the years, Koos for Kids has been able to help numerous terminally ill children by purchasing them laptops, iPads, zoo passes, airline tickets, animals…whatever it might be that makes their days a little brighter.

Hanel was also excited to announce that Koos for Kids is offering a scholarship program: “ We’ll be giving $2500 each for college to two kids of need in Racine. They will get an opportunity to advance and go to school. It’s a pretty cool thing so we’re excited to implement that.”

Koos for Kids has also purchased over 3000 winter coats for disadvantaged children in the local area, as well as organized and run the Challenger Baseball League, where over 60 children with special needs can come and be part of a team and learn the game of baseball.  And there are countless other ways they have helped the local community, thanks to the support of many businesses and caring individuals.

Join Brewers Players & Coaches for a Special Koos for Kids Fundraiser on Sunday, May 15

Brewers bullpen catcher and Racine native Marcus Hanel (otherwise known as “Koos”) has always had a desire to help children and so, about 10 years ago, he formed “Koos for Kids,” a charity focusing on helping terminally ill and disadvantaged children in the area.

Over the years, Koos for Kids has been able to help numerous terminally ill children by purchasing them laptops, iPads, zoo passes, airline tickets, animals…whatever it might be that makes their days a little brighter.

They’ve also purchased over 3000 winter coats for disadvantaged children in the local area, as well as organized and run the Challenger Baseball League, where over 60 children with special needs can come and be part of a team and learn the game of baseball.  And there are countless other ways they have helped the local community, thanks to the support of many businesses and caring individuals.

In two weeks, on Sunday, May 15, you have the opportunity to help support this terrific cause.

The Brewers take on the San Diego Padres at 1p.m. that day and, following the game, Marcus, along with Brewers players and coaches, will be making their way to Hitters Baseball Academy in Caledonia for a Koos for Kids event.

For just $25, you’ll receive a ticket to the event, dinner, autographs from Brewers players, entertainment from the Jesse White Tumblers, and the opportunity to participate in auctions and raffles. Of course proceeds from the event go to the Koos for Kids organization, where they are used to give back to the community.

The event has been held at the Milwaukee County Zoo in the past, but this year, Koos for Kids is trying something new at the Baseball Hitters Academy.

“I think this event will be an excellent opportunity for everyone to meet their favorite Brewers,” Hanel said. “We are also excited to announce that we’re offering a scholarship program. We’ll be giving $2500 each for college to two kids of need in Racine. They will get an opportunity to advance and go to school. It’s a pretty cool thing so we’re excited to implement that.”

Hanel also tells me that some of the players have some fun surprises planned for the event. “There’s kind of some fun stuff we’ve got intertwined that the boys are going to keep under wraps for now. Kind of a sneak attack on the people who are going to be there,” he laughed.

As far as auction items go, Hanel is excited about the unique items they have this year. “We have a Miller Park home plate signed by the whole team, Maldonado’s catching gear, game-used bats, really cool photos from (Brewers Team Photographer) Scott Paulus that have been signed by the players, Badgers stuff, Packers items…” he said.

Hanel says that sales for this annual event are strong, but if you hurry, you can still get in on the fun. Click here to reserve your ticket today!

Why not make it a doubleheader of Brewers fun? Be sure to get your tickets to the Brewers vs. Padres series, too!

5/4 Update: Today, via Twitter, Hanel released a list of players expected to attend the event. They include: Chase Anderson, Jeremy Jeffress, Will Smith, David GoForth, Jimmy Nelson, Matt Garza, Corey Knebel, Zach Davies, Blaine Boyer, Michael Blazek, Chris Capuano, Jonathan Lucroy, Martin Maldonado, Ryan Braun, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Carlos Torres, with more to be announced as we get closer to the event.

Fun Times Had at the “Koos for Kids” Event at the Zoo

Tonight, following the Brewers-Nationals game, many Brewers players and coaches headed over to the Milwaukee County Zoo to take part in a special event benefiting bullpen catcher and Racine native Marcus Hanel’s charity–and raised close to $70,000 in the process.

Marcus has always had a desire to help children and so, about 11 years ago, he formed “Koos for Kids,” a charity focusing on helping terminally ill and disadvantaged children in the area.

Fans attending tonight’s event received a ticket to the zoo (good all day), zoo parking, autographs from Brewers players and the opportunity to participate in auctions and raffles–all for just $20.

Over the years, Koos for Kids has been able to help numerous terminally ill children by purchasing them laptops, iPads, zoo passes, airline tickets, animals…whatever it might be that makes their days a little brighter.

“Some of our Koos for Kids kids who are terminally get to attend the event. Last year, one of the kids, Colton, got to come on stage and meet the guys. He just recently passed away. So when you look back at the reason why you do things, that’s it. This is why we’re doing this. Just seeing kids being with their favorite Brewers, seeing them light up,” Marcus told me.

Join Brewers Players & Coaches for a Special “Koos for Kids” Fundraiser on June 14

Brewers bullpen catcher and Racine native Marcus Hanel has always had a desire to help children and so, about 11 years ago, he formed “Koos for Kids,” a charity focusing on helping terminally ill and disadvantaged children in the area.

Why is the organization called Koos for Kids? Koos is Marcus’ nickname, which he says, came from his mother’s German accent.

“I’d be out in the backyard and get called in, so Marcus became Mar-koos,” he said. The name Koos then just stuck.

And, on Sunday, June 14, you have the opportunity to help support this terrific cause.

The Brewers take on the Washington Nationals at 1:10 p.m. that day and, following the game, Marcus, along with Brewers players and coaches, will be making their way to the Milwaukee County Zoo for an annual Koos for Kids event.

Stay tuned. Closer to the event, we’ll be following up  to let you know the anticipated attendees.
