Fans Treated to “Inside the Brewers” Discussion with Debbie and Mark Attanasio

Tonight I had the pleasure of joining Debbie and Mark Attanasio for an intimate “Inside The Brewers” program at the Rubenstein Pavilion on Prospect Avenue, an event presented by the Jewish Museum Milwaukee in conjunction with their special exhibit Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American.

The Q and A and discussion was moderated by Brewers broadcaster Brian Anderson, who welcomed Debbie and Mark to the stage by playing special “walk-up” songs–“My Girl” by the Temptations for Debbie and “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder for Mark.

Brian Anderson moderated the "Inside the Brewers" discussion with the Attanasios.

Brian Anderson moderated the “Inside the Brewers” discussion with the Attanasios.

Topics covered including what it was like to buy a Major League Baseball team, how the couple initially bonded over baseball, the importance they place on giving back to the community, and family life.

Brian then took the couple on a stroll down memory lane by showing them a series of photographs and asking them to talk about the time and event depicted–what they remember, how they felt, anecdotes, etc.

For me, this was the most interesting part of the evening as I can’t recall ever seeing an interview done in this style. Photos included “never before seen” pictures of Mark and Debbie as children, family photos and photos from special points in time during their tenure with the Brewers.

Here are just a few of the photos, along with a short description (Click on a photo to start the gallery). Those in attendance were treated to many little side stories along the way, complete with loving banter that had us all in stitches.

The event concluded with questions from the audience. Those topics ranged from “Are you committed to keeping the Brewers in Milwaukee?” (the answer was an emphatic “YES!”) to what they enjoy most and least about the city. They both agree what they love the most is what a welcoming place Milwaukee is, but admit it can be “a touch cold.”

I’m so glad I was able to attend the event. It was a real treat and offered a rare chance for fans to do a deep dive with the owner of a professional sports team. I found it very informative and a lot of fun.

This evening was being presented by the Jewish Museum Milwaukee in connection with the current Jewish Museum Milwaukee exhibit, Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American, which opened earlier this month. Mark and Debbie, along with Bud and Sue Selig, also serve as Honorary Co-Chairs of the exhibit, which runs through September 7.

Commissioner Emeritus Selig poses with Mark and Debbie Attanasio at tonight's private preview event.

It has been augmented by artifacts on loan from local organizations and individuals and explores how baseball has served as an arena in which values, identity, ethnicity, and race have been projected, contested, and occasionally solidified.

The exhibit celebrates well-known Jewish heroes such as Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax, as well as iconic baseball pioneers such as Jackie Robinson, Joe DiMaggio, Roberto Clemente, and Ichiro Suzuki. It also highlights baseball’s extended family of vendors, team owners, minor leaguers, amateur players, scouts, broadcasters, journalists, novelists and fans.

Brewers Say “Farewell Captain” in Special Pregame Ceremony

Today, we honored Derek Jeter for his contributions to Major League Baseball in a special pregame ceremony at Miller Park that included Ryan Braun, Carlos Gomez, Doug Melvin, Dick Groch and Mark and Debbie Attanasio.

In recognition of a career well-played, Dick Groch, Brewers Special Assistant to the General Manager, presented Derek with a bronze replica of his Louisville Slugger bat. In 1992, as a scout for the Yankees, Dick recommended that the team select Derek as their first-round draft pick. It was Dick’s pleasure to assist in signing Derek to a Major League contract and it was an honor for him to present the bat to the Yankees all-time hits leader today.

Derek has certainly made his mark in the baseball records and he has made an impact in the lives of young people through his Turn 2 Foundation which supports signature programs that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and toward healthy lifestyles.

Oh behalf of  the Brewers and Brewers Community Foundation, Mark and Debbie Attanasio, along with Doug Melvin and Dick, also presented Derek with a $10,000 check for his foundation.

Finally, in addition, Derek was also presented with a stay at the American Club in Kohler, along with a golf trip to Whistling Straits so he can enjoy his retirement.

Congratulations Derek! May you enjoy retirement as much as we have enjoyed your professionalism and play on the field.

Third Annual Match Day Scheduled for Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Thursday, March 13, community members have the opportunity to work together as a team and make a difference in the Greater Milwaukee area by participating in the third annual Match Day.  This one-day online event, coordinated by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, in partnership with Brewers Community Foundation and other local funders, will support 20 different basic needs organizations that serve as a lifeline to thousands of individuals and families in need.

Match Day offers individuals, businesses and others a chance to support the organizations in our community that are helping meet individuals’ basic needs.  Individuals can donate to the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Basic Needs Fund or to one or more of the 20 participating agencies tomorrow.  Thanks to $750,000 in matching funds contributed by a pool of funders including Brewers Community Foundation and The Ceres Foundation, each donation made online on Thursday will be proportionately matched, up to $750,000.  Over the past two years, more than $4.6 million was raised overall through the event.

Donations could feed a family that may otherwise go without food this week, aid a veteran who is struggling from post-traumatic stress disorder or provide shelter to someone who has just lost their home.

To make a donation, please visit www.matchdaymke.org tomorrow to help support the 20 Basic Needs Organizations in the Greater Milwaukee Area.  Gifts can be made during the 24-hour online giving event on Thursday.  The minimum gift is $10.

Mark and Debbie Attanasio and Brewers Community Foundation are co-sponsors for Match Day, along with The Ceres Foundation, and have donated financially to this cause. Supporters include Erv and Beverly Colton, The Faye McBeath Foundation and United Way of Greater Milwaukee, along with numerous contributors.

The nonprofits benefitting from the funds raised include:

  • Advocates of Ozaukee
  • Cathedral Center
  • Center for Veterans Issues
  • Community Advocates
  • Daystar
  • Family Promise of Washington County
  • Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin
  • Food Pantry of Waukesha County
  • Friends of Abused Families
  • Guest House of Milwaukee
  • Hebron House of Hospitality
  • Hope Center
  • Hope House of Milwaukee
  • Hunger Task Force
  • Milwaukee Rescue Mission
  • Pathfinders Milwaukee
  • Repairers of the Breach
  • Salvation Army of Greater Milwaukee
  • Sojourner Family Peace Center
  • Walker’s Point Youth & Family Center

Friday, 3/14/14 Update: Thank you so much for all of your support for the 2014 Match Day! It was a huge success:
