Brewers fans have the well-earned reputation for filling the ballot boxes with All-Star votes for Milwaukee Brewers players year in and year out. With at least one Brewers player elected to start in five of the last six All-Star Games since 2007, Milwaukee fans demonstrated that it doesn’t take the largest market to be heard as they voted for their favorite Brewers in almost unheard of numbers.
And while it may still be April, it’s time to ramp up and Vote Brewers! Sure it is early, but why can’t we use that time to get ahead in the voting? The Brewers are currently enjoying a nice win streak and this is the time to beat the early rush on voting.
This season, eight Milwaukee Brewers players are featured on the ballot for the 84th Major League Baseball All-Star Game to be held on Tuesday, July 16 at Citi Field in New York City (great All-Star logo again this year by the way, MLB has been knocking it out of the park in recent years with great All-Star logos). Brewers fans will again have the opportunity to show their overwhelming fan support by helping decide which players will be named to the Midsummer Classic through the 2013 MLB In-Stadium All-Star Balloting Program presented by Firestone and the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot presented by freecreditscore.com.
Brewers players on this year’s All-Star ballot include C Jonathan Lucroy, 1B Corey Hart, 2B Rickie Weeks, 3B Aramis Ramirez, SS Jean Segura, OF Ryan Braun, OF Carlos Gomez and OF Norichika Aoki.
At Brewers.com, all fans voting 21 or more times for their favorite Brewers will be entered into a drawing to win Ryan Braun’s Miller Park Suite for a night, complete with tickets, food and a personal visit from the 2011 National League MVP. There is a maximum of 25 votes per email address, but new for 2013, fans can cast 10 extra votes by logging in with or registering for an MLB.com account. More information and rules may be found at brewers.com. Additionally, fans voting online will be eligible to purchase Field Outfield, Club Outfield and Terrace Box seats for select Brewers games at a savings of up to 50% (details available after voting at Brewers.com).
Those visiting Miller Park are encouraged to vote early and often via paper ballot at the All-Star Polling District, set up during Brewers home games along the first base concourse. In-park balloting at Miller Park begins on Monday, April 29 and continues through Friday, June 21, comprising 25 home dates. The Vote Brewers! campaign will feature event staff decked out at home games in promotional t-shirts, and signage along the Miller Park fascia and behind the plate. In addition, media partners FS Wisconsin and Newsradio 620 WTMJ will be promoting the initiative on broadcasts, and the World Famous Klement’s Racing Sausages will help distribute voting information around the city. There will also be voting parties staged during the balloting period.
With every 10 ballots turned in to the All-Star Polling District, fans will receive one raffle ticket that will enter them in a drawing for the opportunity to win a collector’s item daily, ranging from game-used memorabilia to player autographs. A drawing will be held during every home game through June 21 and the winning ticket will be announced during the game. Rules will be available at the Polling District.
Ryan Braun narrowly missed being elected a starter for the 2012 MLB All-Star Game after finishing fourth in voting among National League outfielders to Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers by just over 100,000 votes. Braun was later named a starter to replace the injured Kemp.
In 2011, Braun led National League outfielders in voting for the fourth straight season and led all NL players in voting for the first time (5,928,004). He is the only Brewers player to ever be elected to start in four consecutive All-Star Games (did not play in 2011 due to injury). Rickie Weeks was selected to his first All-Star Game as the NL’s starting second baseman and Prince Fielder started and made his third All-Star appearance in 2011. In 2010, Braun and Corey Hart started for the Brewers (Hart was named as a starter after an injury to Atlanta’s Jason Heyward).
In 2009, Braun and Fielder joined Trevor Hoffman as All-Stars. In addition to Braun in 2008, Hart was named that year to the National League All-Star team via the Monster All-Star Final Vote. In 2007, Fielder received the second-most votes in the National League en route to his first career All-Star team, becoming the first Brewers player to be voted to the All-Star Game since Paul Molitor was selected at third base in 1988. The 2013 American League and National League All-Star Teams will be unveiled on Sunday, July 7 on the 2013 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show on TBS. Both the National League and American League teams will have eight fan-elected starters. The pitchers and reserves for both will be determined through a combination of “Player Ballot” choices and selections made by the two All-Star managers.
Fans can vote for the Major League All-Stars online at brewers.com through Thursday, July 4 at 10:59 p.m. CT.
Working in marketing, I often get asked what our target demographic is…. but that’s not really an easy question because people of all ages truly love baseball and the reasons why fans come out to Miller Park (beyond the team on the field, of course) are endless (think: field trips, birthday celebrations, family reunions, company outings, client meetings, etc.).
Take today for example, I went from watching our annual Weather Day event where we hosted thousands of children for a pregame meteorology lesson from the TMJ4 Storm Team 4 meteorologists to sitting down with Earl Henry, a delightful gentleman who was here to celebrate his 99th birthday.
Earl’s granddaughter, Jill Finlayson, had contacted me earlier this month and told me about all of the things she was doing to make Earl’s 99th birthday a special one. Since he’s a Milwaukee native and a lifelong Brewers fan, bringing Earl out to Miller Park was right at the top of her list. Jill also made sure Earl arrived in style, in a GoRiteway limo.
Earl’s actual birthday was last Thursday, April 11 (which just happens to be the same birthdate as my dad), but today was the best day for them to come out and take in a game on this homestand.
Little did they know just how fitting it actually was.
You see, Earl’s career was dedicated to education and what better day for him to choose to come out (unbeknownst to him) than Weather Day, one of our biggest educational events.
Earl earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the Milwaukee State Teachers College (MSTC). In 1937, he taught at Milwaukee’s Garden Homes School and later, the Boys’ Technical High School (another odd coincidence–so did my own grandfather. I wasn’t able to find out if they had crossed paths, but there was a good chance they may have.) before becoming vice-principal at Thirty-seventh Street School in 1947.
In 1954, Earl received his first principalship at Eugene Field School; in 1959, he became principal of Franklin School on the north side; and in 1967, he became the first principal of Stuart School, where he continued for 12 years until his retirement in 1979.
Earl’s wife Kay was also a dedicated kindergarten teacher in Milwaukee for her career and together, they created the Earl & Kathryn Henry Scholarship Fund at UW-Milwaukee. Now in it’s 10th year, the scholarship aims to benefit undergraduate students enrolled in UW-Milwaukee’s School of Education who plan to become elementary school teachers or school administrators, preferably in the Milwaukee Public School System.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Earl, who talked about his career and former students. He also reminisced about not only his days following the Milwaukee Braves and Brewers at County Stadium, but going back to the Borchert Field days of the minor league American Association Brewers, when he was a good friend of announcer Russ Winnie.
The American Association Milwaukee Brewers played for 50 years, from 1902-1952; they won their first American Association championship in 1913 and repeated the next year. All told the American Association Brewers won eight pennants in their fifty-one seasons.
This year, we’re honoring the 100th anniversary American Association Brewers on May 5. [Click for a photo of the Corey Hart bobblehead.]
For perspective, Earl just missed being born for that first championship, but he was there for their second, although he was just a baby.
It’s amazing to think about and what’s even more amazing is that Earl is still as spry as ever. He needs no help getting to his seat, his memory is sharp as a whip and boy, is he funny!
“I read in the paper that one of the Sausages was stolen,” Earl told me.
“Yes,” I confirmed. “We are glad he’s back.”
“I suppose that’s not the wurst thing that could happen,” Earl said, as he started to chuckle.
Yes, a wonderful family, a love of baseball and a great sense of humor–things that will get you far in life.
We wish Earl a very happy 99th birthday–and many more. We’re glad he could come out to celebrate with us today, where he could feel at home, especially surrounded by all of the teachers and children.

Today while I was at the Cactus League home opener at Maryvale, I caught up with Pete Gourlie, the Brewers Fan Cave fandidate who made it to the Top 30 thanks in large part to your votes!
Pete has been down here since Monday when he and the other 29 finalists invaded Arizona and were put through the wringer by top MLB execs and former players in the quest to whittle that number down to somewhere around 10 finalists who will be chosen to head to New York to start the season in the MLB Fan Cave.
Pete described the process to me and although quite fun, it also sounded quite grueling. After they all arrived on Monday evening,on Tuesday, they went to Chase Field where they were put through several rounds of interviews, including having to give a :60 elevator pitch about themselves.
I asked Pete what he did for his speech and he told me that he used layers of clothing to represent attributes about himself which make him the ideal fandidate:
- First Layer: Jackie Robinson jersey: Pete has the utmost respect for the heritage and history of the game, those who made the game great.
- Second Layer: Fan Cave t-shirt: This, Pete hopes, represents his future.
- Third Layer: Ryan Braun Jersey, autographed by many members of the team, obtained through Pete’s diligence: This represents Pete’s tenacity and determination–and each autograph has its own story behind it.
- Fourth Layer: Corey Hart Condor t-shirt: Pete and his fellow Super Fans have given Corey Hart the nickname of the Condor and have even made shirts to that effect. This shows his creativity.
- Final Layer: Super Fan Tattoo: If you couldn’t already tell that Pete is indeed a Super Fan, his arm will do it for you:
Pete’s speech impressed me, let’s hope it also impressed the judges! After that, the fandidates had fun creating a Les Miserables parody video:
On Wednesday, Pete found himself in Surprise, the Spring Training home of the Kansas City Royals where he had a run-in with George Brett.
“This has all just been surreal,” Pete told me. “I just really appreciate everything that’s happened to me. I feel great about the whole process. I was true to myself and I’m feeling good about it, that they’ll really consider me.”
Although his Fan Cave auditions are over for now, Pete will remain down here in Arizona through next weekend for his annual Spring Training trip.
He said he’s going to try to relax and not think too much about it now, since it is out of his hands.
I sure hope we have a Brewers Fan Cave correspondent this year and I’m sure you do, too, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for Pete; we’re not sure exactly when the final selections will be made, but it’s likely to be within the next two weeks.
This is a new tradition we started last year in the Media Relations Department, giving fans a sneak peek at the cover of the media guide before the guide is actually released. Senior Director – Media Relations, Mike Vassallo, Coordinator – Media Relations, Ken Spindler and I have worked very hard on the guide since last October and now see the light at the end of the tunnel with the project. The guide is officially in the hands of Mario Ziino from Delzer Lithograph in hopes of getting it back in time for the first Spring Training game in a few weeks.
The 2013 Brewers Media Guide cover was created by Brewers Senior Graphic Designer, Jeff Harding. Last year, the Brewers had one of the most powerful offenses in Major League Baseball–leading the National League in runs scored (776), home runs (202) and stolen bases (158). It was the fifth time in franchise history that the team hit 200 home runs in a season. We focused on the offense as an inspiration and Harding and his crew in the Consumer Marketing Department really captured what we were looking for on the cover.
The 2013 Brewers Media Guide will sell for $15 in the Brewers Team Store by Majestic at Miller Park by mid-March. We will also have copies available at the Brewers Team Store at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix at Spring Training. The guide will also be available in .PDF form sometime in the next ten days. When that happens, I will certainly offer a link for everyone.
The third bobblehead of the 2013 season will come on Sunday, May 5 as the Brewers take on the St. Louis Cardinals. The bobblehead will feature Brewers first baseman Corey Hart in a 1913 Brewers uniform and is presented by Kwik Trip.
Wait a minute, you say, the Brewers, formerly the Seattle Pilots, didn’t come to Milwaukee until 1970….
Yes, that’s correct, but there was a Minor League team called the Milwaukee Brewers who played in the American Association for 50 years, from 1902-1952, the team that became the eventual namesake for our beloved Crew!
The Brewers won their first American Association championship in 1913 and repeated the next year. All told the American Association Brewers won eight pennants in their fifty-one seasons.
Thus, we’ll honor the 100th anniversary American Association Brewers on May 5 with this Corey Hart bobblehead.
This is the second Brewers bobblehead for Corey Hart; the Nashville Sounds also honored Corey with a bobblehead this past season.

“What’s Good?” asks the Brewers Community Foundation.
Rickie Weeks helps kids smile brighter by supporting “Team Smile.” Yovani Gallardo supports youth baseball programs in Milwaukee like the Felix Mantilla Little League and the RBI Program. Ryan Braun supports Habitat for Humanity.
While that is just a small slice of what Brewers players do for the community, there is plenty of good in our Milwaukee community. The Brewers and the Brewers Community Foundation are able to shed light on “What’s Good?” in the Milwaukee community and draw attention to those bright spots. BCF week highlights those activities through a series of raffles, auctions and other activities that put “What’s Good” in the spotlight. BCF’s focused areas of interest are related to the causes that highlight the Foundation’s charitable impact in the community.
Perhaps the highlight of BCF Week is the “Ultimate Auction” which is now live on Brewers.com now and will close Tuesday night. There are some amazing prizes and experiences available to fans through this auction. Photo opportunities with players, private hitting and pitching clinics with coaches, pre-game dinner with Brewers TV announcers Brian Anderson and Bill Schroeder. But, perhaps one of the most unique prizes has to be a “Meet & Greet” with Nyjer Morgan who will also record your personal cell phone greeting!

Players’ wives will be selling autographed items from their husbands. Fans can purchase each mystery bag for a $40 donation to the Brewers Community Foundation which is earmarked for various organizations. The wives will be stationed at each entrance to Miller Park, as well as on the Club Level. Mystery grab bags are always fun and knowing $40 will get you an autographed baseball from a Brewers player and knowing the money is going to a good cause is not a bad deal.
Sunday, August 19 – BCF Treasure Hunt
Fans always love game-used items. Game-used items from past games and seasons will be available for purchase in a special treasure hunt at the Brewers Community Foundation table on the Field Level concourse near Guest Relations behind section 116. Items include bats, baseballs, jerseys and other items of interest. I would recommend getting to Miller Park early that day to make sure you have an opportunity to get the best items. I will try to visit early that day and post some items to Twitter.
Monday, August 20 – Brewers Players Favorite Things Raffle
I have always enjoyed this idea. Not only do you learn what is Randy Wolf’s favorite cereal , what is Mat Gamel’s favorite candy bar or what is John Axford’s go to movie, but you have an opportunity to take these items home with you. Fans have a chance to win a basket full of Brewers players favorite things. The baskets feature a wide variety of items that are favorites of Brewers players and coaches as well as autographed memorabilia. Raffle tickets will be sold 2 for $5, 10 for $20 or a wingspan for $50.
Tuesday, August 21 – Strike Out Breast Cancer Raffle presented by Froedtert Center for Diagnostic Imaging – CDI

As the daughter of not one, but two retired librarians, you can imagine how I was surrounded by books growing up. My parents read to me nearly every night and I also learned to read at a very early age. I loved books like Where the Wild Things Are, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and Charlotte’s Web and devoured all sorts of series like Frog and Toad, Curious George, Angelina Ballerina, the Berenstain Bears, The Babysitter’s Club, Little House on the Prairie, American Girls, and so many more.
I have no doubt that my early introduction to reading helped me to succeed in academics and fostered my continued love affair of books to this day (I’m in two book clubs and I visit the library almost every week).So, when I heard that Corey Hart and Brewers Community Foundation are teaming up with the Milwaukee Public Library to support the “Super Reader” summer reading programfor the second year in a row, I was very excited to talk to Corey about his involvement.
“I think it is important for kids to get out there and read,” Corey told me. “The earlier you start reading, the better you are going to do in school. It comes a lot easier to my kids because they started reading early. I never read. I wish I would have. Now I read all the time.”
Travel is a big part of life for a Major League Baseball player and Corey often uses his travel time to read. Religion is also a big part of Corey’s life, so he enjoys reading Christian books.
“Right now I’m reading the Left Behind Series, a series of 16 books about The Rapture and life after. I’m on book three right now.”
Corey said he has a Nook, but that most times, he’d rather read an actual book.
Corey’s wife, Kristina, is also a big proponent of the reading program. The couple has four children; boys Matthew and Brye and girls, Alyssa and Ryleigh.
“My wife reads to the kids every night. We have one of those audio books where you can record your voice reading a story so when I am gone, they can play that,” Corey said. Growing up, Corey’s favorite book was Where the Red Fern Grows, but his children have different tastes. Right now, his oldest daughter is into The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books while his younger daughter prefers books about princesses. The boys like things such as Batman.
According to the Milwaukee Public Library, children who do not read over the summer can lose two to three months in reading skills. And, just 15 minutes of reading a day can have a huge impact on their learning. That’s why they’ve continually promoted a summer reading program each year.
To participate in the program, parents can bring their children to one of the 13 Milwaukee Public Libraries to sign up for the “Super Reader” summer reading program from now through August 30. Just for registering, children ages 0-12 will receive this yard/window sign, along with a folder they can use to track the time they spend reading or being read to.
The library will recognize Super Reader progress with free food coupons, attraction tickets, book bags, and even a free book for their home libraries. The program is free to sign up. Learn more at www.mpl.org/summerreading.

With a new Brewers season upon us, there is always a lot of new things around the ballpark that you have been hearing about. A new manager. The new scoreboard at Miller Park. Some new delicious concession items. If you have visited the Brewers Team Store by Majestic in the last couple of days, you might have seen some new player t-shirts that debuted this week.
I first saw the shirts about a month ago during a photo shoot with the players at Spring Training. We asked the players to model the shirts and those pictures are below. The shirts were designed by Majestic and give unique twist on the traditional player jersey t-shirts that have been extremely popular at Miller Park.
The Ryan Braun and Casey McGehee shirts have a little “America’s Dairyland” touch to them while the “Jersey Shore” shore boys might put on Yovani Gallardo’s tattoo-inspired shirt when “T-Shirt Time” comes around. Closers in baseball are often referred to as “Firemen” and Brewers closer John Axford’s shirt looks like something you would see at at Milwaukee Fire Station.
Available now are Axford, Braun and Prince Fielder. Throughout the season, other players will be rolled out. On May 1, the McGehee and Rickie Weeks shirts will be made available. On June 1, the Zack Greinke and Corey Hart shirts will go on sale and the series will conclude on August 1 when the Craig Counsell and Gallardo shirts debut.
These shirts are available exclusively to the Brewers Team Story by Majestic and will look great in your collection of Brewers player t-shirts. This shirts will sell for $30 each and are available in adult sizes.

It’s that time of year again! The Brewers Clubhouse Sale starts tomorrow at 9 a.m. but John and Cait have a sneak preview of all the great deals for you!
The sale will take place in the Visiting Clubhouse at Miller Park, which has been transformed into a retail store offering fans savings of up to 75% on Milwaukee Brewers merchandise.
Like last year, there are plenty of great items up for sale. You are sure to find something for every Brewers fan on your list and the many items available will allow you to get your Holiday shopping off to a solid yet economical start. (Psst! There are t-shirts starting at just $5!)
Jill Aronoff, Tom Jennings and their retail crew really did a great job in pulling everything together for what will be a fun two days for shoppers at Miller Park.

This must be Phil Rozewicz’ favorite week of the year, his office looks dark as members of the Brewers retail team have taken over his clubhouse to turn it into a retail wonderland for Brewers fans. Phil, enjoy your weekend off and we will see you next week!
When I first walked into the Visiting Clubhouse, one thing immediately caught my eye. It was a die-cast 1:12 replica Harley-Davidson painted with a Brewers logo. A neat gift for the Harley enthusiast or the Brewers fan who already has every bobblehead sitting on their desk. At any rate, this gift is a steal at only $20.
Anyone who knows me knows of my love for all things USA. I always enjoy the American flag caps worn in MLB on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Memorial Day. This red hat with the American flag inside of the Brewers “M” logo is a great way to show your love for the Brewers and America. This hat is another great deal at $20. (Note: Sizes and supplies for this item seemed to be extremely limited!)
Ever since I first visited their store in Philadelphia over 12 years ago, I have always been a fan of Mitchell & Ness. They basically started the retro jersey craze and they continue to be the industry leader in retro apparel. This hooded sweatshirt has a great feel to it and at only $50, it will also give a great feel to your pocketbook.
As I was flipping through some of the t-shirts, I came across this shirt. I was completely thrown off guard because I had never seen it in the store before! Had I seen it, I would have picked it up. Alas, here it is for only $20. like the soft feel to the shirt and I love the Milwaukee script across the front (I was a huge proponent of bringing back the “Milwaukee” script uniforms). Banner is another great brand that makes quality gear.
The question I get most about the annual Clubhouse Sale is the availability of game-used and game-worn items. For all you collectors out there, this is your best place to get those items–and buying them from the source guarantees theauthenticity of every item.
The sale has a great supply of game-used bats in all varieties (broken, new, used, pink) in prices ranging from $75 to $425. A collection of used game balls, player locker name plates, lineup cards and helmets are also available with those items ranging in price from $10 – $150.
With the 40th anniversary season last year and the team wearing the special uniform patch, that mean the availability of game-worn uniforms with the 40th anniversary patch are plentiful. From Corey Hart ($400) to–my personal favorite–the #99 Bat Boy jersey ($50), there are plenty of game-worn jerseys available. Perhaps the best deal is John Axford’s game-worn rookie jersey priced at $250.
Additionally, I did see a number of the Trevor Hoffman 600th Save commemorative prints for sale. Some were autographed (and numbered as a limited edition of 51) and some were framed–all were a great deal.
Finally, I noticed a large supply of authentic blue “Milwaukee” jerseys with the 40th Anniversary patch. While these are not game-worn, they are still authentic and priced at only $100–a deep discount on an authentic jersey (and my personal favorite in the Brewers jersey collection.)
The Clubhouse Sale really does have something for everyone, so I decided that this year, I would give you my preview based on the diverse group of Brewers fans on my holiday shopping list.
First, my dad. Dad is a big Brewers fan and avid golfer. I thought he’d look just dapper in this green polo shirt with the interlocking M and B with crossed bats logo. We brought this logo back for our 90s Weekend during our 40th Anniversary this year and you don’t see it too often anymore. In this shirt, Dad will be a trendsetter, for sure. And at $20 ($70 originally), this shirt is a steal.
Next up…mom. Mom might just be a bigger fan than dad and she loves to entertain, so I thought she’d really appreciate this 3-bowl melamine serving set, which is going for just $15. This will be perfect for the Brewers parties she hosts.
My husband…he doesn’t know it yet, but I’m seriously considering investing in a couple of seats from Miller Park. This offseason, we’re working on a few construction projects and one involves removing a few of the seats, so we’re putting them up for sale! They are $75 each or $100 for a pair and I think it would be so cool to have a pair to complement our baseball-themed rec room. Now we can even enjoy the away games from the comfort of our Miller Park seats! They’re a piece of history and also, a total conversation piece. (Note: Not all seats will have the Miller Park logo on them. Also, you won’t actually be able to take the seat home with you from the sale, but you can reserve one and pick up your authenticated seat(s) next week!
My 6-month-old baby goddaughter, Makena, will look so cute in this set of adorable pink and white retro Brewers onesies. At just $10, I can get her some in a couple of different sizes so she can wear some now and then some to her first games next season!
All of my girlfriends and I have an annual tailgate every year. They all love the Brewers almost as much as me, so that’s why I knew they’d all appreciate these stylish Brewers bags/purses! Originally $30 and $50, these Tessuta Woven purses and this Touch by Alyssa Milano bag are all going for just $10 each.
I have a few Brewers history buffs on my list and I think I will get them something to commemorate our 40th Anniversary (I just love that logo!). We’ve got t-shirts for $10 (originally $25) and beer steins for $5 (originally $10).
Finally, if anyone has me on their gift list, here are a couple of neat things I found for the female fan. (Hint, hint, cough cough.) The first is this super-cute Brewers retro tank for just $10 (originally $30) and the second is this uber-soft hooded t-shirt that is selling for only $15.
