Why Should Will Smith Meet Will Smith? #WillMeetsWill Continues

A couple of weeks ago, Brewers pitcher Will Smith penned a letter to “the other” Will Smith–as in the actor, producer and songwriter, Will Smith….yeah, that guy–inviting him to come visit him in Milwaukee this summer.

Well, it’s been a little while, and despite that video going viral and garnering national media attention for the campaign, our Will has been the first player checking his mailbox in Maryvale each morning, and he still hasn’t heard back.

So, we asked his teammates to pitch in. Check out what Rob Wooten, Jim Henderson, Jeremy Jeffress, Kyle Lohse and Mike Fiers had to say in response to our question: Why should Will meet Will?

Join in the #WillMeetsWill campaign on Twitter and Instagram to see if we can organize our efforts and get Will Smith out to Miller Park this summer to meet his namesake.

Or hey, Will, if you’re reading this… the Brewers play the Dodgers in LA July 10-12 and July 10 just happens to be our Will Smith’s birthday. Just sayin’.

Dear Will Smith… Will Will Meet Will?

In the Brewers Clubhouse, pitcher Will Smith is affectionately referred to as “the third most famous Will Smith,” as his teammates lovingly rank the lefty behind the football player Will Smith (formerly of the New Orleans Saints) and, of course the Will Smith–the American actor, producer, rapper, and songwriter.

Growing up, one would guess that sharing a name with someone so famous could be viewed either positively or negatively. While having a famous name can grab attention, quite certainly, our Will Smith has heard his fair share of jokes in his 25 years on the planet.

One can choose to let it bother him or her, or one can embrace it.

And embrace it Will has. Last year, the Brewers bullpen starred in a Will Smith medley video; Will donned a Fresh Prince of Bel Air baseball jersey; and, this year at Brewers On Deck, Will went undercover to see what people really thought of the Brewers–and him, often getting confused for the actor.

But now, Will has decided that he’s had enough from afar. It is time he got the chance to meet the “other” Will Smith and he’s offering the the actor the chance to come visit him in Milwaukee.

He sat down the other day and penned this letter/invitation:

This is the start of the #WillMeetsWill campaign. Join in on Twitter and Instagram and we’ll see if we can organize our efforts and get Will Smith out to Miller Park this summer to meet his namesake.

Now This is a Story All About How…Will Smith Ended Up with a Fresh Prince of Bel Air Jersey

I’ve said it before. When your name is Will Smith, you have to have a good sense of humor….to put up with people like me who think they are so funny and original:

Will Smith Belair

But earlier this season, when I stumbled across this promotion that the State College Spikes were hosting, even Will himself couldn’t help but get excited:

Fresh Prince NIght

Yes, to commemorate “Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” the timeless ’90s sitcom that really put the “other” Will Smith on the map, on June 29, the Spikes, a Class-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, located in Pennsylvania, wore funky, graffiti-inspired jerseys and hosted Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton, Will’s cousin on the show.

I reached out to Ben Love, producer of in-game entertainment for the Spikes and explained our special situation. A month later, this happened:

Will Smith Brewers Jersey (4)

Will, chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool.

A special thanks to Ben and the SC Spikes for sending us a special #13 jersey for Will. It was very kind of you (especially since you are an affiliate of one of our biggest rivals!) and it made his day.

You may also recall that back in June, the entire bullpen was “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” in NYC at the MLB Fan Cave:

Brewers Bullpen Gets Jiggy Wit It at the MLB Fan Cave; Produces Rap Video Featuring Will Smith, Inspired by Will Smith

Earlier this month when the Crew visited NYC to take on the Mets, many members of the Brewers bullpen paid a visit to the MLB Fan Cave where they filmed a special video.

We teased it for you a bit on social media at the time….

Just a little preview of the bullpen's day at the @mlbfancave. Video to come soon! #Brewers #bullpenlove

…but now we’re excited to share the special video–starring Will Smith, Zach Duke, Mike Fiers, Wei-Chung Wang, and Rob Wooten— with you here:

When your name is Will Smith, you have to have a good sense of humor. And, since the Brewers bullpen seems to be the most music video-friendly group in Major League Baseball right now, the Crew took this opportunity to  channel the 1990s rap scene with a montage/parody of some songs inspired by the “other” Will Smith:

“Here Come The Men in Blue”

“The Wild Midwest”

“The Fresh Prince of Brew City”

“Welcome to Milwaukee”

It was a great day hanging out at the Cave and in addition to the video, I also got a lot of fantastic behind-the-scenes photos to share with you here. Enjoy!

A huge thank you to the folks at MLB Fan Cave for putting this together; it turned out fantastic! Also, thank you to the guys for taking the time to do this; I know I had fun and I think they may have had a little, too. ;)
