Fans had the chance to play the game Heads Up! (An app made popular by The Ellen Show) with Brewers pitchers Michael Blazek and Corey Knebel over at the Social Media Stage yesterday.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the game, it is similar to a charades or Catchphrase. It’s simply a word guessing game where your friends try to get you to say the word on the screen by giving you hints. Only with Heads Up, you hold the phone above your head and it records video of your friend giving hints. You have sixty seconds to guess as many words as you can.
Michael and Corey played against each other for a couple rounds to warm up and get familiar with the game. Corey had never heard of the game before and thought he was going to play the old kid’s game Heads Up 7-Up on stage instead.
“That’s what I’m working with here,” Michael said, playfully jabbing at Corey.
They picked the category Blockbuster Movies and neither of them fared too well, but when the category switched over to Brewers Baseball, a custom category we designed for Brewers On Deck, the guys performed much better.
We invited this pair of fans up on stage to take on the pair.
After that, the guys tried to guess the clues from the crowd:
Thanks again to Michael and Corey and all of the fans who participated in this segment at the Social Media Stage! I know it was at the very end of the day, so I appreciate y’all sticking around!
P.S.-This game is a really fun, easy party game and it’s only $.99 to download the basic version! You can then add on different decks and even create your own, like we did for this segment. Personally recommend!
Another fun addition to the Social Media Stage at Brewers On Deck this year was the #BrewersPhone Wheel.
Fans were invited to come on stage and give the wheel a spin for the chance to have Tyler Thornburg and Gorman Thomas take over their smartphones.
The duo took over fans’ Snapchat and Twitter accounts, made fans change their profile pictures, sent text messages, recorded new voice greetings and even made some phone calls to fans back home while live on stage.
Let’s take a look at some examples.
Here’s a text that Tyler sent:
This fan’s new Twitter profile photo is looking pretty sharp:
Speaking of Twitter, here’s a tweet Tyler sent from this fan’s account:
Here they are re-recording a fan’s outgoing voicemail message:
Looks like the phone call was a hit!
I wish we could have gotten copies of the outgoing voicemail recordings those guys left because they’re hilarious. Maybe the fans reading this will let me call them so I can take another listen-send me a tweet @CMoyer, please, or leave a comment below and I’ll contact ya!
Thanks again to Tyler and Gorman for being such great sports and having fun with the fans at our stage!
Thanks again to those of you who stopped by the Social Media Stage at Brewers On Deck yesterday!
We had tons of fun our morning photo bomb session with Jimmy Nelson and our afternoon one with Taylor Jungmann and Martin Maldonado.
Just a quick note to let you know that the photos are now posted in an album on Facebook. Simply click here to view the album, open the photo you want and click on “Options” to download it! If you feel so inclined, you can also tag yourself in the photos!
The photos are also up now at brewers.com/ondeck.
Thank you to the 11,763 fans who came out to Brewers On Deck at the Wisconsin Center in downtown Milwaukee today!
There were so many stages and events going on all day long that it was impossible to cover it all from a social media standpoint–especially considering that we had our hands full at the Social Media Stage.
This year we pulled out all the stops, including Photo Bombs (with Jimmy Nelson and then Martin Maldonado & Taylor Jungmann), a #BrewersPhone takeover with Tyler Thornburg & Gorman Thomas, Twitter Q&A with Top OF prospect Brett Phillips, a game of Heads Up! with Michael Blazek & Corey Knebel and, last but certainly not least, a much-hyped lip sync battle between Will Smith and Jeremy Jeffress.
This outgoing dynamic duo each chose their songs in advance and performed them in front of the audience at our stage this afternoon.
In round 1, JJ led off with “Where Are U Now” by Justin Bieber and Will followed that up with Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”
In round 2, JJ “sang” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” by the Temptations and Will answered with “P.Y.T.” by Michael Jackson.
For the tiebreaker round, we chose the song…. The guys each had to do their best version of Adele’s “Hello.”
The winner was decided on by the cheers of the crowds. Admittedly it was a VERY close competition. JJ’s got mad dance moves and Will’s humor/”singing” really got the audience riled up.
Alas, we had to choose a winner and Will Smith was dubbed the 2016 #BrewersOnDeck Lip Sync Battle Winner.
For his prize, Will went home with a copy of “I Will Always Love You,” Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits CD and he also won an Adele shirt. However, he had the choice of wearing it for the rest of the day, or making JJ wear it instead.
Here’s what he chose:
Don’t worry folks, we didn’t leave JJ hangin’. He left with the parting gift of a Justin Bieber plush throw. For those of you interested in watching a rough previously live streamed version of the full battle, you have until about 2pm CT on Monday to view the Periscope Broadcast here.
Time for me to sign off for tonight, but we’ll have more Brewers On Deck recap coverage, probably all week long. There was just that much great content.
Also: Speaking of content, don’t forget to share yours with us! Be sure to upload your photos from today’s event to Twitter and/or Instagram using the hashtag #BrewersOnDeck. We’ll select some winners to win a trip down Bernie’s slide, tickets and more!
I don’t know about you, but this event really has me pumped up for baseball season. April 4 can’t come soon enough. 64 days!
Somehow, in the midst of all the fun and excitement at Brewers On Deck, Brewers reliever Will Smith (not the actor) was able to go undercover, posing as a reporter for fake news channel WILL-13 (we picked Lancaster, Wisconsin because we wanted a town that started with an “L”).
We outfitted him with a jacket, credentials and a microphone and sent him out into the crowd with a videographer to interview some unsuspecting fans.
And it was awesome:
There was so much great material it was hard to pair it all down. There were also a lot of outtakes, including some interviews with his teammates, which we felt merited their own separate video:
“I had a really good time doing it,” Will told me. “It was a fun experience playing around with the fans.”
Did Will trick you? Let us know in the comments below!

The Wisconsin Center was home to nearly 30 Brewers players today and a record crowd of 14,138 braved fresh snow and cold temperatures for the Club’s annual winter fanfest, Brewers On Deck Presented by Time Warner Cable.
The crowd surpassed 2012’s prior high mark of 12,118, and last year’s total of 11,722.
“We can’t thank the fans enough for coming out to warm the atmosphere downtown and helping move everyone’s thoughts toward baseball and the 2014 Brewers season,” said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger. “It was a great opportunity for players, coaches and staff to connect with the fans, and we look forward to seeing everyone again at Miller Park throughout the year.”
The afternoon’s highlights included an announcement that the Brewers had completed negotiations and signed free agent pitcher Matt Garza to a four-year contract. The announcement was made on the Main Entertainment Stage by Brewers Chairman and Principal Owner Mark Attanasio, who was joined by President of Baseball Operations Doug Melvin, Assistant General Manager Gord Ash, and Special Assistant to the General Manager Craig Counsell.
“That was definitely a great piece of news to break at the event, and the response from the fans was tremendous,” Schlesinger said.
Brewers pitchers and catchers report to Marvale, Ariz., for Spring Training on Feb. 15.
We asked you to submit your questions for Dennis Haskins, a celebrity guest at this year’s Brewers on Deck event, and we caught up with him today.
