If you know me personally (or follow me on Twitter ), you know I am a cat person. I don’t dislike dogs, it’s just that I’ve grown up with only cats my whole life and I currently own two, Crash and Cowbell.
So, needless to say, when it came to the successful Dawg Days of Summer Promotion at Miller Park the last couple of years, I have to admit I was a little jealous of my canine-loving friends who had the perfect excuse to play dress-up with their pups.
Well, now I can no longer be cat-ty, as I’m pleased to announce that our new promotion for 2013 is the “Brewers TAIL-Gate Contest,” sponsored by West Bend and open to pets of all types.
Fans can submit photos of their pets wearing Brewers gear, either by emailing them to email@example.com, or by bringing them in to the Brewers Team Store by Majestic. At select home games, two pet photos will be chosen to appear on the scoreboard and “compete” to see who wins by fan applause. At the end of each month, we will showcase four winners from the previous contests and fans will then determine who that month’s winner is. Each month’s winner will receive a $150 gift card to the Brewers Team Store. [You may also click here to view the Brewers Tail-Gate Contest Flyer.]
From the monthly finalists, the fans will vote for one grand prize winner during the game on Saturday, August 31. The winning pet will receive a $500 gift card to the Brewers Team Store, as well as an opportunity to participate in a pre-game presentation prior to an early September home game.
How does West Bend fit in? This ties in well with West Bend’s Home and Highway Policy, which provides accidental injury coverage for your pet at no additional cost to you. Visit thesilverlining.com for details.
Entries will be featured in the Brewers Team Store throughout the season. There is also a variety of pet merchandise sold in the team stores at Miller Park and online at brewers.com, so make sure you check it out, dress up your pet and enter the TAIL-Gate contest!
The 2013 Milwaukee Brewers yearbook arrived at Miller Park today featuring 158 pages of beautiful Brewers photos, fun facts and historical information. Fans can buy a copy for only $10 at the Brewers Team Store by Majestic (an absolute steal) beginning today. The yearbook will be available for purchase at Brewers.com at a later date. I will keep you posted on when the yearbooks will be available online.
Brewers Coordinator – Media Relations, Ken Spindler heads up the yearbook project and again did a great job with the book. A story and photo collage on last year’s Bob Uecker statue ceremony, a recap of the 2012 season, a beefed up Player Development section with photos of every Brewers minor leaguer and family photos of current Brewers players and staff are some of the key features in the 2013 yearbook. The book also includes a historical section that looks back at some favorite Brewers moments throughout the years.
Cait’s Summer Reading List: Reviewing Haudricourt’s “100 Things Brewers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die”
I recently finished reading a new book about the Milwaukee Brewers entitled, “100 Things Brewers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die.” The book was written by Tom Haudricourt of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, with a foreword by Jim Gantner.
Haudricourt, who has covered the Milwaukee Brewers and baseball for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (and Milwaukee Sentinel) since 1985, has witnessed many of these items firsthand. This is his third book about the team (he is also the author of Brewers Essential and Where Have You Gone ’82 Brewers?) and “100 Things Brewers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die” covers everything from Brewers Baseball arriving in Milwaukee (1970) through recent triumphs such as the 2011 NLCS appearance.
Mixed in among seminal and paramount moments in Brewers history are funny and bizarre items, along with things that true Brewers fans find essential to the game experience, like the Famous Racing Sausages, Bernie Brewer, tailgating and more. [John is even mentioned in a sidebar within the book, how cool is that?!]
With an average of 2.5 pages dedicated to each “thing,” the book is a quick and easy read. And, although I very much like Haudricourt’s style of sports reporting, this book is a welcome departure from that objective point of view. Instead, each item reads like its own little vignette, complete with quotes—either directly from the person or people mentioned within it, or from another source, such as a newspaper or interview at that time.
In his introduction, Haudricourt notes, “The Brewers…do not have 100 years, or even half that, of history,” which is true, with the Club in just its 44th season–but that does not mean it does not have 100 (or more) items that merited inclusion in this book. And, although I am in my eleventh season with the Club (wow, I’ve been here for one-quarter of its existence!) and I was born and raised in Milwaukee as a Brewers fan, there are still many of these key moments of Brewers history that occurred before I was born (i.e. the 1982 World Series) or when I was too young to remember (1987 Team Streak).
And then I think about all of the Brewers fans who are younger than me, or those who have moved to Milwaukee in the last few years and this is really a book that needed to be written.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan from the days of Harvey Kuenn and Paul Molitor or a new supporter of Ron Roenicke and Ryan Braun, this book contains everything Brewers fans should know, see and do in their lifetime.
In fact, I’d go so far as to say that if you want to call yourself a True Blue Brew Crew fan, you should have to read this book and be tested on the contents, the most important facts about the team, traditions and what being a Brewers fan is all about. Players should be provided with a copy when they sign their contracts. What’s that saying? In order to know where you’re going, you have to know where you’ve been? In only 44 seasons, we have a rich history and I’m confident that in the direction we’re headed, it’s only going to get richer.
I don’t want to give too much of the book away, but I can tell you that I crunched some numbers to get my personal “stats”:
- Of the 100 Things Brewers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die, there are 14 “Things To Do” and I’ve done them all.
- Of the 100 Things Brewers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die, there are 86 “Things to Know” and, of course, after reading the book, I now know them all, but:
- Of the 86 “Things to Know,” I was alive for 71 of them.
- Of those 71, I remember being aware of 46 of them at the time (i.e. some happened when I was too young or wasn’t following as closely).
- Of those 46, 29 of them happened since I started working here (2003).
- From there, I tried to make a list of the ones for which I was actually physically present, but it got difficult to do, so I’ll just call out a few of the more specific things mentioned that I’m proud to say I witnessed in person:
- April 27, 2004: Chad Moeller’s Cycle
- April 28, 2004: Brewers huge comeback win against Cincinnati Reds
- May 16, 2004: Ben Sheets’ 18 strikeouts vs. Atlanta Braves
- September 28, 2008: Brewers Clinch the Wild Card
- September 23, 2011: Brewers Clinch NL Central Title
I’ve also included a photo gallery of some of the “Things” included in the book, but you’ll have to read it then come back to place which ones I’m referencing!
The book is currently available for sale in the Brewers Team Store by Majestic and at other booksellers.
Once you’re done, I’d be curious to know what you think. Did Tom leave anything out? Let me know in the comments field below.
Finally, I’ve got a copy to give away to one lucky blog reader who is the first person to email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) with the correct answer to the following trivia question:
What team did Doug Melvin swing a massive nine-player deal with on December 1, 2003, which six players did we acquire from that trade AND what was the common name Brewers fans used to reference those collective players at the time?
UPDATE: We have a winner! Congrats to Michael from Iowa who knew that this was a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks in which the Brewers received: Wisconisn native Craig Counsell, second baseman Junior Spivey, first baseman Lyle Overbay, catcher Chad Moeller, and lefthanders Jorge De La Rosa, and Chris Capuano, players collectively known as the “Six-Pack”. [Note: I would have also accepted “Brewerbacks”!]
MLB and New Era officially introduced a new series of batting practice caps as part of the MLB Authentic Collection that will be worn beginning with Spring Training. The new caps from New Era, the official cap of Major League Baseball, feature new performance technology as well as fresh designs for all 30 Clubs, including many popular logos that have never been featured on an official on-field cap.
The Brewers have two versions of the cap, one featuring the current, primary “M” and the other featuring the retro “ball-and-glove” logo. The caps are fitted.
The Diamond Era 59FIFTY incorporates new NE TECH™ performance technology, providing players with revolutionary light weight, moisture wicking caps. Made with a new state-of-the art performance diamond print fabric, the Diamond Era 59FIFTY is lighter for increased breathability. The cap also features SOLAREA™, 50+ UV protection that helps deflect the sun’s rays and COOLERA™ technology that wicks away sweat to keep players comfortable and dry.
The collection will be available for purchase next week at the Brewers Team Store by Majestic at Miller Park, the Brewers FanZone Store at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix, on MLB.com and and at all major retailers beginning in March.
You probably voted and have been waiting to hear news on the winner. Just moments ago at “Brewers On Deck,” Ben Peters, of Richfield, Minnesota was announced as the winner of the Brewers Design a YOUniform contest. Peters’ design will be worn by the Brewers in exhibition games on March 22 in Phoenix at Maryvale Baseball Park and on March 30 in Milwaukee at Miller Park. Merchandise including t-shirts and caps featuring the winning design is on sale now at Brewers On Deck and at the Brewers Team Store by Majestic at Miller Park.
Seeing the actual jersey and hat design in person got me really excited for this winning design. The cream-colored jersey and navy blue hat look awesome. I think they will be popular with fans.
As the winner, Peters will receive a trip to Brewers Spring Training 2013 to see the winning design on the field at a game. The hats and uniforms from the winning design will be worn by all Brewers players and coaches at the Friday, March 22 Spring Training game at Maryvale Baseball Park against the Chicago Cubs. Peters will receive airfare for two, tickets to the game in Arizona to see the uniform in action and $1,500 for hotel, ground transportation and other incidentals. He will also have the opportunity to select the jersey and hat worn by one player from that day, plus will receive ten t-shirts and hats made from his design.
“I’ve always loved vintage designs and the Barrelman logo was always a neat look” said Peters. “I wish I knew the name of the person who originally designed the Barrelman logo because I would like to thank him for inspiring me.”
In addition, the Brewers the uniforms will also be worn at Miller Park on Saturday, March 30 as the Brewers take on the Chicago White Sox in an exhibition game.
Last fall, Brewers fans were invited to submit their ideas for an alternate Brewers on-field uniform, and the contest resulted in an overwhelming number of fan entries. After receiving nearly 700 submissions for the Design a YOUniform contest, the Brewers announced the three finalists as selected by a panel of judges.
“The fans’ response to this promotion was tremendous, both in the number of entries received and the votes during the judging of the finalists,” said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger. “It was difficult to select a winner as the three finalist entries all had very solid support.”
The three finalists – two of whom live outside of Wisconsin – were invited by the Brewers to travel to Milwaukee for Brewers On Deck at the Delta Center where Brewers pitcher John Axford announced Peters as the winner on the Klement’s Main Stage. Ron Verrecchio from Catonsville, Maryland and Nicholas Fouts from Madison, Wisconsin were the other two finalists.
In addition to an online fan vote, a panel of voters including Axford, Brewers President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Doug Melvin and Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger judged the finalists. Other judges included Jill Aronoff, Brewers Senior Director – Merchandise Branding and representatives from Majestic, New Era and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The Brewers go for the gold every season. Each of the 30 flags atop the Commissioner’s Trophy awarded to the World Series Champion are adorned in gold and it is the Brewers goal to one day have that trophy at Miller Park. With that in mind, the Brewers will be “going for gold” in a new gold alternate jersey next season.
This exciting Brewers uniform news was announced by the team early this morning. The new gold-colored alternate jersey will be worn on occasion beginning with the 2013 season. The jersey tops will officially make their debut by players and coaches on Sunday at “Brewers On Deck” at the Delta Center in Milwaukee.
The gold jersey will feature “Brewers” in blue script across the front (think about the “Cerveceros” jersey that the team has worn in recent years). It will join the primary white home jersey, the primary gray road jersey, the alternate blue “Brewers” jersey, the alternate blue “Milwaukee” jersey and the retro “Brewers” pinstripe jersey.
The last time the Brewers introduced an alternate jersey was 2010 when the team added the alternate blue “Milwaukee” jersey.
“Our players have worn a similar gold-colored jersey on our annual ‘Cerveceros Day,’ and the feedback from fans and players has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger. “We believe that this jersey will be a very popular style, both on the field and at our retail locations.”
The players did react positively to the gold “Cerveceros” jersey the team has worn–the team won the only game they were worn last year. While normally, it is up to the starting pitcher to decide what uniform the team will wear for any game, baseball players can be very superstitious. If the team has a winning record in the gold jerseys, you could see them pretty regularly next year.
It was no coincidence that the team played the most games and had the best record–35-17–in the blue “Brewers” uniforms in 2012. Part of that could be due to the strong home record the team had, but the team went 10-10 in the home whites–proving there might be a little superstition when choosing a jersey.
The new uniform top will be available exclusively at Brewers On Deck and the Brewers Team Store by Majestic at Miller Park beginning Sunday. The Brewers Team Store by Majestic at Miller Park will exclusively carry the Brewers gold jersey through February 3. Those who purchase a gold Brewers jersey at Brewers on Deck will receive a free Brewers gold jersey chocolate bar.
]Players and coaches can be photographed in the new uniform on Sunday at “Brewers On Deck.”
