This morning, I was forwarded an article about Jorge Lopez, a pitcher for our Class A Advanced Affiliate, the Brevard County Manatees of the Florida State League. He was our second-round draft pick in 2011 and is currently ranked as the Club’s 10th best prospect.
His son, Mikael, has been sick since he was born, and after several months of visiting doctors and hospitals–including a visit to the leading children’s hospital in Jorge’s home country of Puerto Rico, Mikael was recently diagnosed with an unknown autoimmune disease that has necessitated an intestinal transplant.
As one can imagine, the medical bills and travel expenses for this young family (Jorge is just 21-years-old) have piled up during this trying time.
To assist the family, next week, on Friday, August 8, the Manatees are hosting a charity golf tournament called “18 for 18” as Lopez wears jersey #18.
“There are no words, no words to express my gratitude for what the Manatees and Brewers have done and are doing for me and my family,” Lopez told reporter John Torres in the article. “Not everyone does this type of stuff. They have offered me their hand.”
So, what can the rest of Brewer Nation do to help this member of our Brewers family if you can’t get down to Florida to play golf next week?
Please keep the Lopez family in your thoughts and prayers and, if you’d like to send a donation, you can fill out the 18 for 18 Individual Donation slip and send it in to the Manatees.
7/30/14 Update: Kevin Soto with the Manatees, Director of Community Relations for the Manatees reached out to me today, thanking Brewers fans for their support and letting me know that they have set up an online donation site for the Lopez family here.
Thank you to John Torres for his article in Florida Today. You can read his full story here.
Adam McCalvy also wrote a story about Jorge around the All-Star Break as he pitched for the World All-Star Team in the Futures Game this year.
