As we celebrate Mother’s Day at Miller Park, it’s hard not to look out at the sea of pink without recalling a special memorable moment in Brewers lore–Mother’s Day 2006.
The Brewers utility player Bill Hall was one of many Major Leaguers who used pink bats on Mother’s Day that year, the first year of MLB’s “Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer” program.
But Hall gained nationwide attention when he hit a 10th-inning walk-off home run with the bat to beat the Mets 6-5 on Sunday, May 14, 2006.
And to make the story all that more compelling, his mom, Vergie, was in the stands that day at Miller Park.
Several weeks after his dramatic homer, Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio spent more than $25,000 to buy the pink bat at auction on MLB.com, and presented it as a gift to Vergie Hall. The money went to the Komen Foundation.
The highlight inspired a “Bill Hall Pink Bat Ticket Package” in support of the foundation as well as an alternate version of an all-fan bobblehead giveaway the following season.
