Bernie’s Barrelman Ale
During each homestand, we will be meeting with John DiMartini, Executive Chef at Delaware North Sportservice/Miller Park to sample some of the latest and greatest Miller Park fare and review it here, for you.
Earlier this month, we held a contest asking fans to vote on the name of a New Brew that would be created in a partnership between the Milwaukee Brewers and Leinenkugel Brewing Co. Over 10,000 votes were received and by an overwhelming margin, Bernie’s Barrelman Ale was selected as the winner. This new beer will be available exclusively at Miller Park beginning this Monday, May 27, but we were lucky enough to attend the launch party last night and bring back a review for you!
Bernie’s Barrelman Ale
The newly created beer is an ale, brewed with pale and roasted caramel malts along with cascade, nugget and willamette hops.
Cait: I must admit, I am not a huge beer drinker. In fact, usually my beer intake is limited to chasers for my beverage of choice, Bloody Marys. I just feel very full when I drink beer and I’m usually not a huge fan of the taste, save for a few of the Leinie’s flavored beers like Lemon Berry Shandy and Honey Weiss. But for a beer named after my favorite mascot and sold uniquely in my favorite ballpark, I will gladly make an exception.
Again, not a connoisseur, so I’m not really able to describe the beer in a way that will resonate with aficionados, but, in my own words, this brew was very flavorful yet still light enough that I didn’t get that overly full feeling. In other words, I could easily drink Bernie’s Barrelman Ale and still have room for some of the other yummy ballpark fare that John and I review.
I think the only problem fans are going to have with this brew is that they won’t be able to get it outside of Miller Park!
I’m with Cait in saying that I’m really not an expert on beer and craft beer. That being said, I was excited to try Bernie’s Barrelman Ale and came away surprised and pleased. I could taste that this wasn’t an ordinary beer, this was something special that the people at Leinenkugel’s took time in brewing. It wasn’t too heavy, but at the same time had rich flavor.
I enjoyed two glasses and left with a satisfied, but not an overly full feeling. It was crisp and refreshing, perfect for a summer evening at Miller Park. I know craft beers are a trend right now and if that is something you are into, I would not visit Miller Park without trying Bernie’s Barrelman Ale. How many sports teams, let along mascots, have their own special brew!? It is fitting for the Brewers and I encourage everyone (21 years old and over, of course), to try this next time at Miller Park.
And don’t just take our word for it…
Where To Satisfy Your Craving: Bernie’s Barrelman Ale is available exclusively at Miller Park and fans will be able to buy the “New Brew” at locations on the Field Level behind sections 103, 118 and 125; on the Loge Level behind home plate and sections 206 and 213; and on the Terrace Level outside sections 413, 420 and 432. Served in a 20-ounce cup, it is $7.75.

By an overwhelming margin, Bernie’s Barrelman Ale was selected as the name for a new beer created in a partnership between the Milwaukee Brewers and Leinenkugel Brewing Co. The beer will be available exclusively at Miller Park beginning this Monday, May 27. Over 10,000 votes were received and 55% voted for the winning name.
“With Milwaukee’s heritage of brewing beer, having an ale made exclusively for the Brewers was a great opportunity to pursue,” said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger. “We appreciate the work that Leinie’s and our partners at MillerCoors put into this initiative, and were thrilled with the response of the fans in naming the new beer.”

“A great beer deserves a great name, so we’re thankful for the teamwork from the Brewers and fans,” said Jake Leinenkugel, President of Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. “We’re sure fans will have many opportunities to raise a glass of Bernie’s Barrelman Ale to toast the Brewers’ success.”
The other names up for a vote included “Brew Crew Brew” (which netted 35% of the vote) and “Brewers All-Star Ale” (10%). For more information, please visit brewers.com/newbrew. Tomorrow afternoon, we will be headed to the MillerCoors Brewery for the first official tasting of Bernie’s Barrelman Ale. We will have a review and photos from the event posted to the blog.
