How You Can Pitch In to Support Brewers Minor-League Pitching Prospect Jorge Lopez

This morning, I was forwarded an article about Jorge Lopez, a  pitcher for our Class A Advanced Affiliate, the Brevard County Manatees of the Florida State League. He was our second-round draft pick in 2011 and is currently ranked as the Club’s 10th best prospect.

His son, Mikael, has been sick since he was born, and after several months of visiting doctors and hospitals–including a visit to the leading children’s hospital in Jorge’s home country of Puerto Rico, Mikael was recently diagnosed with an unknown autoimmune disease that has necessitated an intestinal transplant.

As one can imagine, the medical bills and travel expenses for this young family (Jorge is just 21-years-old) have piled up during this trying time.

To assist the family, next week, on Friday, August 8, the Manatees are hosting a charity golf tournament called “18 for 18” as Lopez wears jersey #18.

“There are no words, no words to express my gratitude for what the Manatees and Brewers have done and are doing for me and my family,” Lopez told reporter John Torres in the article. “Not everyone does this type of stuff. They have offered me their hand.”

So, what can the rest of Brewer Nation do to help this member of our Brewers family if you can’t get down to Florida to play golf next week?

Please keep the Lopez family in your thoughts and prayers and, if you’d like to send a donation, you can fill out the 18 for 18 Individual Donation slip and send it in to the Manatees.

7/30/14 Update: Kevin Soto with the Manatees, Director of Community Relations for the Manatees reached out to me today, thanking Brewers fans for their support and letting me know that they have set up an online donation site for the Lopez family here

Thank you to John Torres for his article in Florida Today. You can read his full story here.

Adam McCalvy also wrote a story about Jorge around the All-Star Break as he pitched for the World All-Star Team in the Futures Game this year.

Welcome New Manager Ron Roenicke!

I hope everyone has been enjoying John’s posts from the Arizona Fall League. I certainly know that I have! By the looks of things, John hasn’t just been basking in the warm Arizona sun- he’s been hard at work producing some really good stories.

Back home in Milwaukee, we’ve been busy, too and today was a particularly exciting day…

Memo.jpg

It figures that John would leave for one week and, as he mentioned in a post from earlier today, end up missing the press conference where we announced Ron Roenicke as our new manager this afternoon.

Typically, John would be very involved in an event like this because, as Media Relations Manager, he interacts with the media on a daily basis. I know he’s sorry he couldn’t be here and I also know that he’s looking forward to working with Roenicke next season.

So how does a move like this impact the Consumer Marketing department? Well, for one thing, we wanted to make sure that we properly welcomed Ron to Milwaukee, so as soon as we heard the news, Jeff Harding, our Graphic Designer, got busy creating artwork for the Clear Channel Outdoor boards:

Thumbnail image for Welcome Ron Roenicke-CCO.jpg

Thanks to our partners at CCO, we were able to get this up and running simultaneously with the start of the press conference. We hope you saw them up around town!

Like most of the front office staff, I personally attended the conference. I had no idea what to expect, but I came away from it very impressed by our new skipper and I also have a renewed excitement for the upcoming season- it will be here before you know it!

Brewers beatwriter Adam McCalvy has a couple of good stories about Ron up on his blog already, so I’m going to direct you over there to learn more about our new manager and, in particular, his running philosophy.

On behalf of John and Cait…Plus 9, I just want to echo what our outdoor message–and everyone else– is saying: Welcome to Milwaukee, Ron Roenicke! We’re excited to have you on board!

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

I snapped two quick photos of the scoreboard demolition yesterday and then when I looked again today, I was shocked by the progress.  Miller Park is beginning to look quite bare!

scoreboard1.JPGYesterday, the video board started to come down.
scoreboard2.JPGLast week, the Miller Park sign came down and early this week, the side panel featuring advertisements was removed leaving only the video board and the matrix board.

scoreboardthur.JPGWhen I looked today, the video board was completely down and the matrix board was in the process of being removed.

scoreboardthur2.JPGI’m guessing at this pace, nothing will be left from the original scoreboard by the end of the week.

Compare today’s photos with the shots that Adam McCalvy talked about last week and we are rolling right along at Miller Park.
