Volunteers & Entertainment Needed For The Brewers Mini & 10K!

If you’re interested in participating in the Brewers Mini-Marathon +10K, but not necessarily by running, we’ve got some great options for you!

The 13.1 mile half-marathon and 10K, beginning and ending at Miller Park on Saturday, September 20th will take over 750 volunteers to ensure that all participants have a safe and fun experience.

I talked with Tai Pauls, Manager of Special Events for Brewers Enterprises and she told me that they are in need of volunteers in a variety of locations and would welcome anyone to join them.

There are two ways to volunteer:

EVENT CREW VOLUNTEERS

Brewers Enterprises is looking for people who want to be a part of the Brewers Mini +  10K Event Crew. You can volunteer as an individual or as a group. [Note: Since proceeds from the race go to the MACC Fun, this is also a great opportunity for a community service project!]

Individuals are needed to help out in a variety of areas including at packet pick-up, the full gear check area, at the start & finish line, as course marshals, as part of the bike team leading the race, or at the post-race tailgate party. All individual shifts & jobs can be selected on the volunteer page of the race website.

Volunteer Groups are also extremely important to help man the various Aid Stations along the course and they are still looking for groups to join them. At the Aid Stations, groups will assist in distributing water to the runners and lend some moral support to runners like John and me by cheering us on the way. Tai encourages groups to embrace their stations and make them their own by displaying team/organization/company banners, colors, etc.  Other areas where groups can possibly be utilized are at the finish line, race results tents or packet pick-up the day before the event.

Last year, sororities, charitable groups, school groups and local companies who manned their stations were integral to the race’s success.

ENTERTAINMENT VOLUNTEERS

In addition to keeping things organized and safe for the runners, Tai’s goal is to make sure that we have an extremely fun and enjoyable experience.

To do this, they are seeking a variety of entertainment acts stationed along the course to entertain the runners. We have some great acts lined up already, but we’re always looking for family friendly entertainers, cheer groups, and bands to perform for participants and spectators on the course.

Entertainment groups are considered volunteers as well, but will receive great exposure and promotion as a Brewers Mini +10K entertainment act.  All bands, groups, etc. will be listed with logo and/or name on www.brewersmini.com and will be included in the email correspondence to all runners.

So, what’s in it for you?

In addition to being a part of this unique event, all volunteers and entertainers will receive:

  • An official Event Crew t-shirt
  • A ticket voucher good for a regular season game in April/May of 2015

Depending on the volunteer assignment, the timeframe for race day on Saturday, September 20, is approximately 6am-11:30am (some jobs start later or end earlier). More information can be found on the sites below.

Famous Racing Sausages Run/Walk a Success! Brewers Mini is 8 Weeks from Today!

Today, over 3400 people took part in the sold-out Brewers Community Foundation’s 16th Annual 5K Famous Racing Sausages Run/Walk and it was a huge success!

The top finishers were Katie Meyers and Steffen Uhrich and the top finisher in the mascot division was Italian. If you ran today’s race, click here for searchable results, which will be available this afternoon.  

The weather was just right for the event and  Brewers coaching assistant Joe Crawford served as the Celebrity Starter for this year’s race.

Fundraising efforts for the event raised money for Fisher House Wisconsin, which provides a “home away from home” for military and veterans’ families to be close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee.

This event is a perfect precursor to the Brewers Mini-Marathon, which takes place 9 weeks from today, on Saturday, September 20. Registration is still open and you can save by signing up by Thursday, July 31.

Congratulations to everyone who participated and finished the race today and thanks to the many volunteers who helped put on such a great event.  There is nothing like that feeling of crossing the finish line and it was great to see the smiles on the faces of everyone as they crossed the line.

New #BrewersMini +10K Fundraising Incentive: Special Brewers Mini BobbleHank!

Have you signed up to run the Brewers Mini-Marathon or 10k this year? If not, there is still time!

If you’ve already committed, we hope your training is going well!

Whether you’re participating in the race, or you’ve thought about it, but don’t have the chance or the stamina this year, you can still participate in another race–the race to wipe out childhood cancer and related blood disorders—one child at a time as the fundraising efforts for the event benefit the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer).

Over the past two years,  the Brewers Mini + 10K has raised over $145,000 for the MACC Fund by participants in this event. With your help, we can push that number even higher. 

And because incentives are helpful not only in racing, but also in fundraising, new for 2014, Brewers Enterprises has a great new one to keep you motivated:

Raise a minimum of $40 and receive a limited edition bobble head of Hank the Ballpark Pup sporting his Brewers Mini-Marathon + 10K gear!  Hank is one of the newest and most beloved members of the Brewers team after being found and adopted at Spring Training this year.

Hank first appeared at camp on February 17, the day of the first workout for pitchers and catchers. The Brewers have worked closely with the Arizona and Wisconsin Humane Societies since that first day, and their staff provided counsel on how best to care for Hank’s basic needs as he adjusted to his new surroundings. Hank’s circle of caregivers in Phoenix worked tirelessly to ensure that he had the best care possible until his “forever home” was determined.

Hank made frequent appearances at Spring Training games in a concourse booth, where fans lined up for an opportunity to have their photo taken with Hank in exchange for a voluntary donation to the Humane Society. Through these and other opportunities, Hank has already helped raise thousands of dollars to support the cause.

Hank arrived in Milwaukee in mid-March on a Southwest Airlines charter flight and, although he has been adopted by a staff member at the Club, he has made several appearances at Miller Park and other events. Hank merchandise (sales from which benefit the Wisconsin Humane Society) continues to fly off the shelves and tickets for a Wisconsin Humane Society Day featuring a BobbleHank giveaway are virtually sold out.

That’s one more reason why you’ll want to sign up for the race and help fundraise for this important cause.  But you’ll have to act fast. These Hank bobbleheads are limited and available to only the first 2,750 race participants who raise $40 or more.  Only one bobble head per race participant, given for raising/donating a minimum of $40.  All funds raised benefit the MACC Fund.

Individual fundraisers will also have the chance to get their name entered in a raffle for great prizes.  The top three individuals or groups will win a special prize.

Prizes include everything from autographed baseballs and a game-used bat to a trip down Bernie’s slide and a party at Helfaer Field. For a full list of prizes, click here.

If you’re running the race and have already started fundraising, that’s great! Please know your support and efforts are much appreciated We’d also like to hear from you–what’s been working? Brewers Mini Marathon and 10K Set for September 20; Registration Now Open!

Was one of your New Year’s resolutions to increase your fitness level and/or run a race? Great–let us help you with that!

The third annual “Brewers Mini-Marathon and 10K, Presented by Sendik’s” is set for Saturday, September 20, 2014.  Registration is now available online at www.brewersmini.com.

Last year a combined 7,000 runners, representing 38 states, participated in the Mini-Marathon (13.1 miles) and the 10K race (6.214 miles). The races both begin and end at beautiful Miller Park and offer scenic and unique courses that will take participants around and through many Milwaukee landmarks including the Miller Valley, the Harley-Davidson Museum, Mitchell Park Conservatory (The Domes), and the Miller Park warning track.  Prizes for the top finishers will be awarded.

All participants will receive a free Brewers ticket voucher good for select games at Miller Park in April or May of 2015, a participant medal and a “tech” shirt.  A post-race tailgate party outside Miller Park with live music will also take place.

Great course support will be provided with aid stations featuring water and Gatorade, misting stations, and entertainment along the way. Refreshing snacks and water will be provided by Sendik’s at the finish line. Spectators will have plenty of free parking at Miller Park and will have the opportunity to watch racers run through Miller Park while being shown on the scoreboard.

Race participants helped to raise over $145,000 during the first two years of the Brewers Mini-Marathon and 10K, with all fundraising proceeds benefiting the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, Inc.) and childhood cancer research in Wisconsin.  Fundraising for the MACC Fund is supported by the Brewers Community Foundation and participants can create their own fundraising page at www.brewersmini.com and submit online donations.  Individual fundraisers will have the chance to get their name entered in a raffle for great prizes.  The top three fundraising groups will win a special prize.

The cost for the Mini-Marathon and 10K, respectively, is $65/$45 for those registering by April 30, $75/$55 for those registering between May 1 – July 31, $85/$65 for those registering between August 1 – September 20 and $100/$80 for those registering on packet pick-up day (if space is available).  The earlier you register, the more you save!

Race packets can be picked up at Miller Park on Thursday and Friday, September 18 and 19, 2014.

Brewers Mini Marathon + 10K Wrap-Up

Last Saturday, over 7,000 participants from 41 states turned out at Miller Park for the second annual Brewers Mini-Marathon, (with a 10K added on this year!). For the most part, runners had great weather–a beautiful fall day that got just a little warm toward the end of the race.

The scenic course took runners past the Palermo’s Pizza Factory, the Harley-Davidson Museum, Marquette University, the Mitchell Park Domes, the Miller Valley, Saz’s Restaurant, through Miller Park with a loop on the warning track and ended just outside the front of the ballpark.

Congratulations go out to Scott Mueller of Pewaukee, Wis. who finished the Brewers Mini first overall with a time of 1:13.50–a pace of 5:38!  The women’s top finisher was Dani Fischer of Madison, Wis. with a time of 1:18.30.  If you’ll recall, Dani was our top female finisher last year as well; she beat last year’s time by 19 seconds! For the 10K, Aaron Nodolf of Menomonee Falls, Wis. was the top finisher with a time of 34:20.

Brewers Mini Marathon Preview: Race to Feature 11 Very Special Athletes

The second annual Brewers Mini Marathon and 10k is Saturday, beginning and ending at Miller Park.  Last year, the race started out with some thunderstorms and chilly temps, but this year it looks like sunshine, blue skies and temperatures in the 70s (runners, start hydrating now!).

Runners of all types and abilities will be racing on Saturday, but a special group of runners are giving 11 special athletes an opportunity to race.  On Saturday, my TEAM TRIUMPH’s disabled “challenged” athletes will take part in the race.

Racing on this team are over 70 participants including 11 challenged athletes (called “Captains”) guided by one to four able-bodied athletes (called “Angels”) run. The Captains are pushed in a specialized racing chair and for almost all the 11 captains will be the first race they have ever experienced. The team will lead off the event starting a few minutes before racers and will have a dedicated tent located near the start/finish-line.

The only organization of its kind, myTEAM TRIUMPH enables hundreds of challenged athletes to experience the thrill and character-building benefits of participating in the greatest endurance events throughout the state.  They create opportunities for challenged athletes (disabled individuals of all ages) to take part in races and endurance events like the Brewers Mini. Becoming race finishers and receiving their congratulatory medal, the Captains finally get to experience the thrill, challenges and sense of accomplishment one achieves by participating in events such as a road race or triathlon. For many of the Captains, it is the first time they hear support and cheers from the many fans and spectators along the way.

Through their mission, they hope enrich the health and well-being of people with disabilities by fostering lasting, authentic relationships through the teamwork environment of endurance athletics.  I remember seeing a number of these participants in the race last year and it was very inspiring.  I’m very happy that the group is growing and will be back this year.  If you are participating in the race as a runner or a fan, be sure to give these runners a special cheer or wave as you see them.

In addition to the good that myTEAM TRIUMPH is doing, there are other ways racers can give back to the community through Saturday’s race.  Participants and their supporters are invited to give to the MACC Fund and Brewers Community Foundation through fundraising.  There is still time to raise money for this great organization as you can make donations through Saturday.  More information on the MACC Fund and the fundraising aspect to the race can be found here.

Packet pickup for Saturday’s race begins today from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Miller Park on the Club Level and continues tomorrow from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.  Packet Pickup is organized alphabetically by last name, and you must have a photo ID to pick up.  You may pick up a packet for a friend. Please make sure you have a copy of their photo ID.  Remember there WILL BE NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION OR PACKET PICKUP AND there are no transfers or refunds.  After you pick up your race packet, please double-check and make sure that the enclosed information is properly assigned to you.

I am not participating in this year’s race, but Cait is volunteering at the “Back of the Pack.”  If you want to join her, look for her among the volunteers who will be making sure no runner gets left behind.  If you are looking to volunteer, there are still many opportunities to take part.  Your organization, group or company can enjoy team-building while supporting our community. Groups are needed to help with Aid Stations and/or other areas. Running For the MACC Fund

It’s the homestretch for the Brewers Mini-Marathon and 10K. If you have signed up and haven’t started training, what are you waiting for!? Less than two weeks until the big race!

And… that also means less than two weeks to help fundraise and support a very important organization, the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer).

For over 35 years, the MACC Fund has raised over $41 million for childhood cancer and related blood disorder research. It is a cause that has touched many lives, most likely someone you may know.

The MACC Fund works with the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center. In addition, the MACC Fund also sponsors research centers in Madison and Milwaukee.

The Brewers have teamed up with the MACC Fund to raise money for their cause. The race is a great way to shed some light on how important the MACC Fund is to childhood cancer research.  Visit BrewersMini.com to donate in the name of any person running the Brewers Mini.

Today, 4,000 people took part in the sold-out Brewers Community Foundation’s 15th Annual 5K Famous Racing Sausages Run/Walk and it was a huge success!

The top time was 15:55:20 (a 5:08 pace, wow!) by Ben Garbe of New Berlin and the top finisher in the mascot division was Polish. If you ran today’s race, click here for searchable results.  This link will take you to a .PDF of complete results as well.

Another unique opportunity for those who want to get their exercise, but don’t want to run the race, is to be part of the “Back of the Pack” team, the team that will walk behind the very last runners to help cheer people on and motivate them to keep going.  If any runners are having a hard time staying on pace you can help them take a break on the SAG Wagon. [NOTE: You must be able to physically walk 13.1+ miles for this position.]
