USO Wisconsin to Host Gala Celebrating 75th Anniversary; Military Honored as “Heroes of Wisconsin”
On Saturday, USO Wisconsin will host its first “Heroes of Wisconsin” Gala, a patriotic celebration honoring U.S. military members for exceptional service and commemorating the USO’s 75th anniversary.
The event will be held at the Italian Community Center in downtown Milwaukee. Keynote speakers include Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, Milwaukee Bucks Vice President Alex Lasry, and Wisconsin’s Adjutant General, Major General Donald P. Dunbar. The program begins at 7 p.m. preceded by a cocktail reception.
“This event helps us raise money so that USO Wisconsin volunteers are able to connect more U.S. military and their families across the state,” says Josh Sova, executive director of USO Wisconsin. “It is also a time to celebrate five people whose lives of service to our country and our community are certain to be an inspiration to everyone.”
Those being honored include military service members from Wisconsin for their military and community service:
Lt. Col. Karl Zacharias – Army – Mondovi, WI
Staff Sgt. Jerome Vereen – Marine Corps – Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (Milwaukee resident)
Command Master Chief Chad Elliot – Navy – Milwaukee
Master Sgt. Thomas J. Atwood – Air Force – Lawrence, Kansas (Oak Creek resident)
Chief Petty Officer Tommar Franklin – Coast Guard – Chicago (Kenosha resident)
Sgt. William R. Wilson – Family of the Fallen – Racine
In addition, Bob Quinn, Executive Vice President – Finance and Administration with the Milwaukee Brewers, will receive the “Community Partner Award” and this year, five companies will be recognized as “Veteran Friendly Workplaces.” The finalists are:

The evening’s entertainment will be provided by The Radio Rosies, a vocal trio performing songs from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s during cocktail hour. The U.S. Navy Band Great Lakes is scheduled to play during dinner in the Pompeii Grand Ballroom.
