Matt Garza: Throwing Strikes on the Mound & Lanes to Support Sojourner Family Peace Center

On Sunday, July 19, you can join Matt Garza and his fellow teammates for the Brewers Bowl-A-Thon, a fun event designed to help raise money for the Sojourner Family Peace Center, a safe haven for abused women and children.

I recently sat down with Matt to discuss the upcoming event and find out why this cause is so important to him.

“I’ve been raised to respect women. They shouldn’t be caused harm. They’re the mother of your children. They represent the future. And children….there should never be any anger, any aggression towards a child because it’s never their fault,” Matt said.

This year, WaterStone Bank and Brewers Community Foundation have teamed up to benefit Sojourner through the “K’s For A Cause” program. WaterStone Bank and BCF each make a donation to the Center for every strikeout recorded by a Brewers pitcher at Miller Park during the season (295 at home so far this season–37 of which have come from Garza).

As of this writing, the team has 295 K’s at home so far this season, 37 of which have come from Garza.

“It’s an important cause and I’ve got to try even harder to strike more guys out,” Matt said.

The goal of the Sojourner Family Peace Center is to ensure the safety of victims of domestic violence and provide a pathway out of violence for victims and abusers, by making positive and lasting changes.  The Center is the largest nonprofit provider of domestic violence prevention and intervention in Wisconsin, serving over 9,500 clients each year.

Funds raised through the “K’s for a Cause” program as well as through the Bowl-a-Thon will be used to help with the creation of the new Family Peace Center facility in addition to supporting the organization in general. Fellow starter Kyle Lohse recently visited the construction site which is slated to open later this year. The new building will be located at 619 West Walnut Street in Milwaukee and this co-located center will offer coordinated services for those impacted by domestic violence. In addition to moving and expanding the current shelter, Sojourner Truth House, and the 24-hour hotline, Sojourner is joined with Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Police Department, and the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, among others at the site.

Matt does not proclaim to be as adept at throwing strikes on the lanes as he is on the mound, but he says it will be a fun event to support this worthy cause.

“I think you have to bowl quite a bit to have an average… I’m just happy to hit the pins,” he laughed.

If he’s not the best bowler on the team, then who does he think might be?

“I say Lohse, just ’cause he’s had a lot of experience,” Matt said. And at first, I thought he meant Kyle was a big bowler… until he added, “He’s got a lot of years behind him,” a subtle dig at Kyle’s veteran status on the team.

As for the worst bowler on the team? “I think Luc because he doesn’t handle balls very well,” Matt joked again, jabbing at his catcher.

Well, regardless of bowling prowess, all attendees at this event are guaranteed to have a good time.

There are several packages from which to choose for interested participants, from the simple “Dug-Out Ticket,” which includes admission to the event and complimentary appetizers and beverages, to the “Grand Slam Sponsor Package.”  The Grand Slam package includes a bowling lane for up to five guests, shoe rental, sponsorship opportunities, T-shirts, a VIP reception and much more.  It also includes 10 Field Level tickets to a future Brewers game and an opportunity to watch the Brewers take batting practice on the field.  To top it all off, Matt  will take a picture with you and your group at your lane.

Other great packages such as the “Brew Crew” and “The Batter” include unique prizes and features, all while helping raise money for this worthy cause.
