Brewers Community Achievers: John Swanson.
The Brewers Community Achievers Program presented by AllState recognizes residents throughout the state of Wisconsin each month during the season for displaying extraordinary efforts in their community.
All adults and school-aged children throughout the state of Wisconsin are eligible to participate in the program. Fans can nominate their Community Achiever online or pick up a nomination form at the Guest Relations Booth on the Field Level Concourse at Miller Park during the season.
The first honoree of 2014 was recognized on the field prior to tonight’s Brewers vs. Padres game at Miller Park. John Swanson is a teacher working with disabled youth at Lakeland School and has collaborated with the YMCA to start the “Dream Team,” a baseball team for children with all levels of disabilities. Through the Dream Team, children learn about the game of baseball and sportsmanship.
Ten years ago, John started with 10 participants and the program has now expanded to 75. He recruits volunteers of all ages to help, as well as seeks local sponsors to support his efforts. He also recruits other Little League teams to play against the Dream Team. John works tirelessly to make sure that youth with disabilities are giving opportunities to participate in sports.
As a winner of the award, John received four game tickets to tonight’s game, on-field acknowledgement and the opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the game, along with a Brewers Community Achiever certificate and a gift bag filled with Brewers memorabilia.
Thank you, John for making a difference in the community!
