Brewers Team Up With KaBoom for Playground Build

Brewers Community Foundation Week officially kicked off today with a great community outreach event on Milwaukee’s North Side.  A group of Brewers front office staff, players and their wives, volunteers from the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee and other local volunteers came together today to build a new playground at the Northside YMCA.

The design of the playground was based on drawings created by children who participated in a Design Day event in May.  The Brewers had a tough game in Texas last night and an early morning arrival back to Milwaukee today.  That didn’t stop members of the team including manager Ron Roenicke, Tom Gorzelanny, Jim Henderson and Rob Wooten from joining the rest of the group at the build site.  Brewers photographer Scott Paulus captured some great photos from earlier today.

Today’s kids spend less time playing outside than previous generations in part because only 1-in-5 children live within walking distance of a park or playground. This play deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically, socially and cognitively. Children need a place to play every day to be active and healthy, something KaBOOM! has been committed to since 1996.

The new playground will give more than 1,200 children in the community with a safe place to play. Currently, the young children have a tot lot available, but the older children are in need of a great place to play and this will definitely help the neighborhood.

The playground is the first built in a collaborative effort by KaBOOM! and the Brewers. Additionally, the playground is one of more than 150 playground builds KaBOOM! will lead across the country in 2013 to fulfill its vision of a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.

Beyond the Diamond is a series of community outreach events that will take place during the season from May-August.  These events involve partnering with Brewers Community Foundation, players/coaches, Brewers Wives, alumni and team staff, working hands-on in the community. The community events will be funded in part by Brewers Community Foundation and focus on the areas of health, education, recreation and basic needs. Today, the focus was recreation.

KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most. Children today spend less time playing outdoors than any previous generation, a fact that is having disastrous consequences on their health, achievement levels, and overall well-being. Social entrepreneur Darell Hammond founded non-profit KaBOOM! in 1996 in Washington, D.C. with a vision of creating a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America because children need to play actively every day at home, in school and in their communities. Since then, KaBOOM! has mapped over 90,000 places to play, built more than 2,300 playgrounds, and successfully advocated for play policies in hundreds of cities across the country. KaBOOM! also provides communities with online tools to self-organize and take action to support play on both a local and national level.  For more information, visit www.kaboom.org.
