Gomez and Segura Named to MLB All-Star Team
The day the All-Star Teams are selected is always an exciting day around the ballpark. There is always a buzz knowing at least one player from your team will receive the honor of representing their team in the Midsummer Classic.
Today was no different at Miller Park as two Milwaukee Brewers were named to their very first MLB All-Star Team. Carlos Gomez and Jean Segura will represent the Brewers at Citi Field in New York on July 16 in the MLB All-Star Game. They were named reserves on the National League squad during the selection special on FOX.
Gomez is hitting .319 (7th in NL) with 13 home runs and 41 RBI this season. He also has 18 stolen bases (T5th in NL), 20 doubles and a National League-leading nine triples. He is also third in the National League in both slugging percentage (.572) and extra-base hits (42). He has picked up National League Player of the Week for the week of April 15 – 21 after batting .500 (9-for-18) with five runs, two home runs and three RBI in six games.
Not only have the offensive numbers of Gomez been impressive, but how about his defense?! Last night, he robbed a home run as he scaled the wall. Those plays have been routine for Gomez.
Segura is hitting .322 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI this season. Although he is not considered a rookie, it is Segura’s first full season in the Major Leagues and he was named to his first Opening Day roster out of Spring Training. A key piece in last year’s Zack Greinke trade with Los Angeles of Anaheim, Segura leads the Brewers with 26 stolen bases (2nd in the NL) and is the only player in the Major Leagues this season with ten or more home runs and 25 or more stolen bases.
Segura’s eight triples are tied for second in the National League and his 31 multi-hit games rank fourth in the NL. He also enjoyed two double-digit hitting streaks during the month of June (10g and 12g).
Like Gomez, Segura’s defense has also been impressive all season as he has been very solid at shortstop.
Between the two of them, they have combined for 206 hits this season (Segura 109, tops in the National League, Gomez 97). That ranks second among National League teammates, trailing only Yadier Molina (106) and Matt Carpenter (105) of St. Louis (211).
This is the first time since 2011 that the Brewers had more than one All-Star. Last year was the first year the Brewers were represented with only one player since 2005. This is also the first year since 2006 that the Brewers do not have a starter in the game. Segura is the first Brewers shortstop selected to an All-Star team since J.J. Hardy was selected in 2007.
Make sure to support Gomez and Segura by tuning in to the game on Tuesday, July 16 on FOX. It is always a great event and is a great showcase for the game.
