MLB First-Year Player Draft Kicks Off Tonight

2013-MLB-draft1

It will be a very busy day at Miller Park today.  Of course, we have the Brewers-Phillies series kicking off at 7 p.m., we also have the Johnny Logan Walk of Fame induction ceremony pregame.  In addition to all of that, tonight marks day one of the three-day MLB First-Year Player Draft.

The MLB Draft is unique in that it takes place mid-season, unlike the other sports leagues that host drafts during the off-season.  That brings challenges and excitement at the same time.  Players picked tonight can be in the minor league system within weeks.

Brewers Director of Amateur Scouting, Bruce Seid, along with the rest of the Baseball Operations staff, have met in the Brewers draft room for about two weeks now.  Amateur scouts, Crosscheckers Scouting Supervisors and Brewers Medical representatives have all been scouring reports, watching video, hosting workouts at Miller Park and developing lists in preparation for the next three days.

the Brewers will make two selections on Day 1 of the First-Year Player Draft, which begins at 6 p.m. CT.  The team’s first pick will be at #54 in the second round.  They will also make a selection at #72 (Compensatory Balance Round B).  Milwaukee forfeited its first-round selection for signing right-handed pitcher Kyle Lohse as a free agent.

The First-Year Player Draft spans three days of activity from Thursday through Saturday, and will take place at the MLB Network Studio 42 in Secaucus, New Jersey.  Draft coverage will begin live on MLB Network and MLB.com at 6 p.m. CT tonight.  The Brewers’ first selection (#54) will take place at about 9:34 p.m. CT and pick #72 will take place at about 10:02 p.m. CT.  The Houston Astros have the first overall selection in tonight’s draft.

Representing the Brewers at the MLB Network Studio will be former Brewers pitcher Ken Sanders and Manager of Administration for Player Development Mark Mueller.

The selection rotation is determined by the clubs’ reverse order of finish at the close of the previous championship season.  The Draft, which is comprised of 40 rounds, will continue on Friday at noon CT for Rounds 3-10. The Draft will resume on Saturday for Rounds 11-40 at noon CT and will continue through its conclusion.  The complete draft order can be found here.  A live draft tracker can be found here.
