In case you weren’t aware (and we’re betting you weren’t), today is Hairstyle Appreciation Day. Yes, really.
According to HolidayInsights.com, “Hairstyle Appreciation Day celebrates uniqueness of all styles of hair. It allows us to express our individuality. Each generation of youth creates its own hairstyles, or comes back to style that were popular years ago. We include among the hairstyles, hair coloring and shaved heads.”
Anyway, it’s one of those random “holidays” that pop up and we thought we’d have some fun celebrating each unique ‘do on the Crew. The Brewers take their hair very seriously. Pitcher Hiram Burgos and catcher Martin Maldonado each serve as unofficial “Clubhouse Barbers.” They can often be seen in the clubhouse tightening things up before games with trimmers. See if you can guess who’s who!
Check back later today and we’ll have the reveals! Update: All reveals have been posted. Hope you had fun!
April is Autism Awareness Month and Major League Baseball is teaming up with Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, in a league-wide effort to support Autism Awareness.
Autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development, characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. An estimated one in 88 children in the U.S. is on the autism spectrum – a ten-fold increase in prevalence over the last 40 years.
Founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism, Autism Speaks is dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Since its inception, the organization has committed more than $195 million to research and developing innovative resources for families.
To show our support, tomorrow night’s Brewers vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates game has been dedicated as our Autism Awareness Game.
Autism Speaks Milwaukee will be at the game and will have an information table set-up on the Field Level concourse. Brewers Community Foundation has provided them with tickets for the game and will be hosting special activities for select families during batting practice.

Last year, I also took most of these songs and turned then into a personal playlist on Spotify. I’m going to try to keep it updated during the season, so join me in listening if you’re like!
So now, what about you? What’s your favorite, or most memorable Brewers at-bat song? And, if you were a player, what song might you choose as yours?
Starting on Opening Day, for every “whiff” (strikeout) across MLB during the 2013 regular season, Head & Shoulders with Old Spice has pledged to make a $1 donation to the MLB Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI ) program. The RBI program is the MLB youth initiative designed to give young people from urban and underserved communities the opportunity to play baseball and softball, encourages academic success and achievement, and teaches important life lessons and values.
MLB fans can take part in the “Season of the #Whiff” on Twitter all season long and help their team & community–the MLB Club with the most tweets each month will earn $10,000 for their local RBI Leagues!
Here’s how YOU can help the cause in Wisconsin:
Celebrate strikeouts by Brewers pitchers by incorporating #WHIFF + @Brewers into your tweets. You’ll see us doing this all season long on our accounts, so we hope you’ll follow along!
Track our progress by following @HSforMen on Twitter or visiting the Head & Shoulders “Season of the #Whiff” page on Mlb.com.
We are currently in 3rd place for April with two days to go, but I know Brewers fans can continue to embrace this promotion and come on strong so we can come out on top! Pay attention and start tweeting @Brewers #Whiff!
“When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
“When you come to a fork in the road, take it…and try these concessions!”

Miller Park Bloody Marys
During each homestand, we will be meeting with John DiMartini, Executive Chef at Delaware North Sportservice/Miller Park to sample some of the latest and greatest Miller Park fare and review it here, for you.
Let me start off by getting this out of the way: I
like love am mildly obsessed with Bloody Marys. They are my drink of choice. Whether it’s 10am or 10pm, there is no bad time for a Bloody, in my opinion. I like my Bloody Marys spicy with a variety of fixin’s and I even consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur, trying them at varying restaurants and rating them on my own scale. I have my own personal Bloody Mary blog. I make it a point to attend the Tomato Romp on Milwaukee’s East Side each year; I have made a pilgrimage to the place where the Bloody Mary was purportedly invented (King Cole Bar in the St. Regis Hotel in New York City); and I have even made Bloody Mary-inspired recipes like a Bloody Mary salad or Bloody Mary burgers, which shows you how much I just crave that taste. I guess it helps that tomatoes are my favorite food to begin with.
Anyway, needless to say, I have my favorite spots to get a Bloody around the city. Thus, this is why you shouldn’t take this lightly when I say– without bias– that Miller Park is one of them.
SportService puts their own twist on the Miller Park Bloodys by combining Skyy Vodka and Ocean Spray Bloody Mary Mix, along with some extra spices like worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and celery salt. You can order them mixed to your liking–mild, medium or spicy, although, I’m told spicy is the preference of most Brewers fans. The drinks are then topped off with fixin’s like pickles, olives and, new this year, Benny’s Bloody Mary Beef Straws.
Yes, you read that right–BEEF STRAWS, a beef stick hollowed out into a glass-to-mouth transportation device.
I came across this genius product on my own about six months ago (they are available at select retail locations). I tweeted about the straws and the next thing I knew, two packages arrived from Benny (Ben Hirko) himself.
A little background on the origin of it, from Benny, via the company’s website:
During my 15+ years in the restaurant/bar business I’ve always loved trying new things to make people smile. One evening while bartending I was chatting with 2 customers. They had brought beef snack sticks with them to enjoy while having a couple of beers. Always hungry, I asked for one. While snacking on the stick, I thought to myself these would taste fantastic in a bloody mary! I began thinking of the best way to use it, and immediately thought it should be a straw instead of just a stick. As a straw, the bloody mary would be able to soak into the beef and be a juicy snack all the way through. Armed with this new idea, I started making them at home for my friends and family. Everyone loved them, and after some research I thought I should make these available for everyone. I hope my idea can add a bit of fun, and great taste to your bloody marys for years to come.
After receiving the straws, I was anxious to make myself a bloody and let me tell you… It took me back to the days of my youth, using a Twizzlers to drink soda and add a bit of cherry flavor. In a more grown-up version, Benny’s straws absorbed the Bloody Mary goodness from the inside out as well as the outside in.
That’s why I was so very excited to hear that we’d be using Benny’s Bloody Mary Beef Straws in all of our Bloodys at Miller Park this season, becoming the first MLB Ballpark to do so.
I’m hoping you’ll enjoy the straws just as much as I have, especially in the Miller Park Bloody Mary.
Enjoy and remember to drink responsibly!
(out of 5)
Where To Satisfy Your Craving: Fans can find the Miller Park Bloody Mary on the Field Level on two carts near the Home Plate Gate and on a cart near Section 117; they are also available on the Loge Level, near the Press Box and in the right-field corner.
NOTE: On Sundays, you can find a Build-Your-Own U-Skew Bloody Mary station near the Home Plate Bar on the PNC Club Level. Those are $12 each, made with Jimmy Luv’s mix, and include all the fixin’s you can fit on a skewer. Choose from options such as: celery, asparagus, sausage, cheese, mushrooms, hard boiled eggs, olives, pickles, cherry tomatoes and more.
DIY Network has joined forces with MLB Network for the “Pin Your Turf, We’ll Crash Your City” Pinterest Contest and Milwaukee could end up on the popular show Yard Crashers!
Milwaukee, along with eight other Major League cities, is featured on DIY Network’s Pinterest Board, where fans can pin postcards from the select cities starting now through Wednesday, May 8 for a chance to have licensed contractor Matt Blashaw and the Yard Crashers team ambush the winning baseball town. Shooting this summer and premiering in 2014, a special episode of Yard Crashers will feature the winning city’s ambush and surprise one lucky fan with a home run outdoor makeover.
Brewers fans can help increase our hometown score with each competitive re-pin of this image (you can click right on it and be taken to Pinterest):
So far, the Astros are in the lead, but since we know Brewers fans vote and share in droves when posed with a challenge, hopefully that will change very soon!
“People always ask me to come and crash their space,” said Matt Blashaw, host and licensed contractor of DIY Network’s Yard Crashers. “Now is your chance. Just show your club some Pinterest love and I may show up in your town, your yard, and give you a winning space!”
Along with the Brewers, the other Clubs we’re pitted against are: Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Houston Astros and the Minnesota Twins.
Starting in 2009, DIY Network and MLB Network partnered together for special episodes of DIY Network’s popular series, including Yard War: Baseball in 2010, House Crashers in 2011, Desperate Landscapes and Man Caves in 2012, and currently Mega Dens in 2013.
Official rules are available on DIYNetwork.com. Catch all new episodes of Yard Crashers on Monday nights at 9 p.m. CT on DIY Network.

What sports enthusiast hasn’t dreamed of standing on the field where their favorite team plays, gazing into the stands filled with cheering fans and hitting the winning home run or scoring the game-winning touchdown? Reebok Spartan Race promises that same adrenalin rush to competitors at the Wisconsin Spartan Sprint at Miller Park happening Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 in Milwaukee.
Reebok Spartan Race, voted Outside Magazine’s Best Obstacle Race in 2012, is the world’s leading obstacle racing series and the first of its kind to have global rankings. With 350,000 participants in 2012 and 60 events planned for 2013, Reebok Spartan Race is making this one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Reebok Spartan Race is a timed event series featuring races at four escalating distances in locations worldwide that culminate in a World Championship Finale with cash and prizes for the champions – with a half-million dollars in cash and prizes awarded in 2012 alone. While featuring competitive elite heats, Reebok Spartan Races are for athletes of all levels and abilities.
To watch a video of the race at Citi Field, click here.
“Based on the huge success of our Fenway Park and Citi Field events in Boston and New York respectively, we recognized the appeal of the more intimate stadium setting,” said Spartan Race founder Joe De Sena. “Fans will get to experience Miller Park in a rare, up-close-and-personal way as the course winds throughout the entire stadium – including stands and concourses – and ends on the field.”
The Reebok Spartan 2013 calendar will include several Sprint Races at some of the nation’s favorite professional sports stadiums. Other confirmed sites include Citi Field, in Flushing, N.Y., April 13 that brought 12,000 competitors, Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, PA, September 28, and a return to Fenway Park, in Boston, MA. Saturday, Nov. 16.
“Fans, stay tuned for announcements about future events coming to a stadium near you,” De Sena noted, adding that locations are being selected that already have a strong Reebok Spartan following. “We’re picking places that are passionate about their sports,” he continued, “plus, we want to give our most loyal fans multiple opportunities within a calendar year to compete in a Spartan Race.”
Adult heats will start at 8 a.m. continuing in roughly one-minute, 10-person waves throughout the day, with individual start times assigned at the event. As with all Spartan events, points will be awarded and elite performers can win entry to a larger, even tougher Super Spartan event. The three-mile course is a head-to-head, time trial, speed-style event, with the unique twist of incorporating numerous, challenging obstacles for which Spartan Race is famous.
Each racer will receive a commemorative medal, t-shirt and photographs along with access to Miller Park and instant fame on its massive HD video board.
Children also can join in the challenge with the Jr. Spartan Adventure Race. Spectator access to the event will be free with a limited number of luxury viewing suites available.
“Spartan Race’s mission is to rip people off their couches and do what we as human beings were made to do: run, jump, sweat and climb,” De Sena asserted. “Our stadium races will offer a unique setting to do that.”
For more information about Spartan Sprint at Miller Park, including entry fees and deadlines, spectator tickets, parking and children’s activities, or to register visit: http://www.spartanrace.com/miller-park-obstacle-racing-spartan-sprint-2013.html. 2012’s inaugural Mini-Marathon (13.1 miles) was a big success. We raised over $111,000 in proceeds to the MACC Fund and sold out over a month before the race date. More than 5,000 runners (including me and John!) represented 32 states. New for the second year of the “Brewers Mini” is the addition of a 10K race (6.214 miles) for the event which will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013.
The half marathon and 10K begins and ends at beautiful Miller Park and offers a scenic and unique course that will take participants through many Milwaukee landmarks including the Miller Valley, the Harley-Davidson Museum, Mitchell Park Conservatory (The Domes), the Miller Park warning track and others. Prizes for the top finishers will be awarded.
All participants will receive a free Brewers ticket voucher good for select games at Miller Park in April or May of 2014, a participant medal and a “tech” shirt. A post-race tailgate party outside Miller Park with live music will also take place.
Great course support will be provided with aid stations featuring water and Gatorade, misting stations, and entertainment along the way. Spectators will have plenty of free parking at Miller Park and will have the opportunity to watch racers run through Miller Park while being shown on the scoreboard.
Fundraising proceeds from the Brewers Mini-Marathon and 10K, Presented by Sendik’s will once again benefit the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, Inc.) and childhood cancer research in Wisconsin. Participants can create their own fundraising page at www.brewersmini.com and donations can be made online. Individual fundraisers will have the chance to get their name entered in a raffle for great prizes. The top three fundraising groups will win a special prize.
The cost for the Mini-Marathon and 10K, respectively, is $65/$45 for those registering this Tuesday April 30. The earlier you register, the more you save!
Complete race details, a course map and other information can all be found at http://www.brewersmini.com/.
Not going to lie here, Cait and I are a little biased here as we are both Marquette University grads, but we are very excited to announce that head coach Buzz Williams and the Marquette Men’s Basketball team will be at Miller Park on Monday, April 29 to be honored in a pregame ceremony. The ceremony will start at 7 p.m.
Williams will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game and members of the team will join Williams on the field for a pre-game recognition.
The Golden Eagles were the regular season BIG EAST co-champions and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament last month. The team finished with an overall record of 26-9 and has the second longest home winning streak in the nation at 25 games.
We will post photos from this event during the game on Monday!
Thanks to Aleta Mercer of the Brewers and Scott Kuykendall of the Marquette Athletics office for help in coordinating Marquette’s visit to Miller Park. Buzz threw a strike!
