What John and Cait Ate…Green Week!

Last homestand, we were really excited to introduce a new series to you: What John and Cait Ate.

During each homestand, we will be meeting with John DiMartini, Executive Chef at Delaware North Sportservice/Miller Park to sample some of the latest and greatest Miller Park fare and review it here, for you.

At Miller Park, it’s easy eating Green.

Today, at our meeting with Chef John, we were treated to the organic, grass-fed hamburger and a couple of eco-friendly grab and go salads in honor of Green Week at Miller Park.

Organic Grass-Fed Hamburger- $6

This organic hamburger is a special menu item that was brought in to Miller Park especially for Green Week. The beef is locally distributed by Organic Prairie Family of Farms of La Farge, Wisconsin. The hamburgers come from cows that are fed 100% natural, pesticide-free feed.

John:   I love a good burger and generally shy away from burgers while at ballparks because they often don’t sit well. This burger was pretty good and tasted fresh. The leaner cut of meat still had good flavor and for even more, you’ll want to add some famous Secret Stadium sauce. I find it really cool to know that the burger comes from Wisconsin. Wisconsin people have a lot of pride and knowing that the burger came thanks to the hard-working farmers of the state is reason enough to try it!

Cait: The organic hamburger is available this week only, so it is definitely worth a try! As I noted in my last post, I am not a huge fan of red meat, but with this burger, I could definitely taste a difference. It was not as greasy as your average hamburger. Chef John informed me that I was correct–this meat is a little leaner since there is not as much saturated fat as in a regular burger. Without that extra marbling, the meat tends to get a little dryer, so Chef John noted that this burger is best served medium rare.

Where To Satisfy Your Craving: This burger is available at the diners on the Field Level behind Sections 108 and 126 (pictured below), on the Loge Level behind Sections 211 and 226, on the Club Level outside of Section 316 and on the Terrace Level, outside Sections 413 and 429.

Next up…

Chicken Caesar Salad- $8.50

This salad is your traditional Chicken Caesar Salad, with crisp lettuce, parmesan cheese, croutons and generous strips of grilled chicken. This salad is not new to Miller Park, but it deserves a mention during Green Week because, although this salad is technically not completely organic, some of its ingredients are. In addition, the box that it comes in is eco-friendly; it is made from recycled materials.

John: Full disclosure…One of my  first summer jobs was making Caesar salads at many of the Milwaukee-area festivals. To this day, Caesar salads take me back to those summer days and making sure that “the right amount of dressing and parmesan cheese was on every piece of lettuce.” Now I’m at the ballpark doing a different job and sometimes I’m here looking for a little change in diet from the regular ballpark fare. nce in a while, I might try something I wouldn’t normally have at the ballpark or I might just need that serving of greens. This simple classic will do the trick and hopefully the parmesan cheese and dressing is spread evenly!

Cait:  Did you know that we serve salads at Miller Park outside of the all-inclusive areas, NYCE Stadium Club or Suites? Well, I will admit that I didn’t and I must say that it is really nice to know that there are some healthier options available here for those that are looking. Personally, however, even if I am trying to be “good,” if I am going to the ballpark, I will typically give myself permission to indulge a little and make up for it by eating better at other meals or mixing in an extra yoga class. Thus, this salad–although very good and very refreshing–probably wouldn’t be high on my must-eat list. So many ballpark foods, so little time!

Note: We recognize that rating this salad as “On par with the Brat,” according to our rating scale is a little ironic, but in doing so, we just mean that while it tastes good, overall it is a pretty simple item.

Spinach & Romaine Salad- $7.50

The Spinach & Romaine Salad is new to Miller Park this year and it is so much more than just spinach and romaine! Ingesting this medley of spinach, romaine, walnuts, bacon, gorgonzola cheese and tomatoes topped with a refreshing raspberry vinaigrette dressing will make you feel like you’re at a chic bistro downtown instead of in the bleachers down the left-field line. Like the Chicken Caesar Salad, some of the ingredients included are organic and the box that it comes in is eco-friendly.

John: This salad had a little more flavor than the traditional Caesar. It had the look and taste of something you wouldn’t expect to find at a ballpark. Anytime you toss gorgonzola cheese and bacon on a salad (which is pretty often for me), I’m in! This would be a nice light meal for a hot day game at Miller Park.

Cait: Summer on a plate, or rather, in an eco-friendly box! Although there was nothing wrong with the Chicken Caesar Salad, I felt like it was your average Caesar salad–it didn’t have the special flair that many other items at Miller Park do. On the flip side, this salad definitely stood out to me as one of the better salads I have had in a long time, anywhere. It is also a nice alternative to traditional ballpark fare and a nice way to get in your greens, especially during Green Week!

Where To Satisfy Your Craving: Both of these salads are available at the Grab and Go Stations behind Section123 on the Field Level concourse and Section 343 on the Club Level.

Note: The Grab and Go stations deserve a little shout-out of their own. If you’ve been booking it past this little refrigerated stand on your way to hunt down your Pulled Pork Parfait, you might be missing out on some solid snacking options. In addition to the salads, this convenient stand also offers a selection of wraps (veggie, ham & cheese and smoked turkey) as well as some quick, healthy snacks such as: fruit cups, veggies and dip, fruit, pickles and hummus with pretzels. There are also some less-good-for-you-but-still-really-good snacks, such as an assortment of Hostess snacks, chips, peanuts, cheese curds, and a sausage & cheese platter. This stand also carries many beverages such as Pepsi products, bottled water, Miller Lite, Gatorade, Sobe Lifewater and juice.
